Upcoming events at the Iowa Arboretum

Soup Supper - Friday, Jan. 31, 4-7 p.m.

Join us for a hot bowl of soup at the Arboretum. Allen Pattillo, Extension program specialist at Iowa State University, will speak about aquaponics. Aquaponics combines aquaculture and hydroponic plant production into a sustainable agricultural production system. Learn about aquaponic home systems. Allen will give his presentation at 5:30 p.m., the fee is $7.

Four Seasons Family Series, Winter Bird Watching - Saturday, Feb. 1, 9–11 a.m.

Whether you are already an avid bird watcher or just getting started, come spend a morning indoors gazing on feathered friends at the Arbortetum’s bird feeders. Nan Bonfils will lead an activity to show us why there are so many different kinds of feeders and why we need so many different kinds of seeds. Karl Jungbluth will teach the basics of bird identification as we check a variety of species and feeder behavior. Linda and Tom Thomas, from Wild Birds Unlimited (Ames), will prepare us for the 17th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count coming up later in February. Each family will make a bird feeder to take home.

The fee is $10 per family, per class, for Arboretum members and $15 per family nonmembers. Register by Jan. 30 online or call 515-795-3215.

Second Saturday Morning Educational Series with Joe McNally, Fruit Trees - Saturday, Feb. 8, 9 a.m.-noon

Joe McNally, the new horticulture project manager, will tell you everything you need for selecting, growing and maintaining fruit trees in Iowa. Dress for inside and outside demonstrations. The fee is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. Register by Feb. 6 online or by calling 515-795-3215.

Pruning 101 and 202 With Joe McNally - Sunday, Feb. 9, 9 a.m.-noon

Join Joe as he explores the fundamentals of tool selection, tool sharpening and pruning for form and structure in the first hour of the class. Dress for outside demonstrations and be ready to prune. Hot chocolate and coffee will be on hand and Joe recommends that you bring your own pruning tools. The fee is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers.
