February Craft of the Month: Hometown Love String Art

Black History Month Button Making
Reflect on the tradition, relevance, and importance of Black History Month for the past, present, and future during the month of February. Stop by The Workspace to make a button or magnet for just 50 cents. Designs feature inspirational quotes and images that celebrate achievements by black Americans and remember the central role of African Americans in US history.

Learn the Yang Style Short Form as developed by Cheng Man Ching. The fun, easy-to-learn movements of The Form refresh the spirit and help improve balance, posture, flexibility, confidence, circulation, and overall health and well-being. Students will also learn a few Baqua and Chi Kung health exercises. Classes are appropriate for college students to seniors and everyone in between. Lloyd has been studying and practicing Yang Style Tai Chi for more than 20 years.
Beginners: Saturdays beginning February 1, 10 - 11am for 10 weeks
Intermediates: Saturdays beginning February 1, 11:15am - 12:30pm for 10 weeks
This class will lead you through basic swing dancing so that you’ll feel comfortable on the social dance floor and dancing to a variety of swing music. We’ll touch on elements of Jitterbug, Charleston and Lindy Hop. Swing is a great social dance and is loads of fun. No partner or experience required!
Mondays beginning February 3, 7 - 8pm for 6 weeks
Begin your exploration of metalsmithing by learning how to work with different types of metal, how to safely use tools, and techniques such as sawing, drilling, forming, chasing, annealing and riveting. Students will complete one or two projects depending on complexity. Pendants, earrings and bangle bracelets are just a few of the possibilities!

Fine Silver (Metal Clay) Jewelry
Although metal clay looks and feels similar to clay, it becomes 99.9% silver after firing in a kiln. Stamp it, carve in it, sculpt it—the possibilities are endless! Learn to use this versatile and beautiful material to make a pendant or earrings.

Paint Your Own Pottery: Valentine’s Day Gifts
Join us for a fun exploration of techniques in “painting” bisque. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick up, just in time for Valentine’s Day. Pre-registration with payment is not required but a call to reserve a spot is recommended.

Woodshop: Nesting Boxes
Make a 6, 5 & 4 inch set of nesting boxes. Part of the class will utilize hand tools to learn a traditional hand joinery technique. Then learn to use the machinery to make boxes efficiently. The Woodshop Orientation class is helpful, but not required for this class.

Through this class, students will become comfortable using oil paint, and gain confidence in color mixing, composition, and paint application. It is meant for both beginners who have never painted before and more experienced painters who would like to try a new perspective and get a chance to paint with others. Students will share supplies.

For the beginner who wants to learn the fundamentals of woodworking equipment. Proper usage of the machinery will be covered, as well as woodshop safety. This class is required in order to use the woodshop on your own.

Paint Your Own Pottery: Date Night
A great way to start a date or hang out with friends on Valentine’s Day. Studio fees are two for one so $4 for two ISU or $5 for two public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick up. Pre-registration with payment is not required but a call to reserve a spot is recommended.

Learn to size mats, cut straight and beveled edges, and hinge mount artwork. Bring a 5 x 7 or smaller art piece with you to class. This class is required in order to use the mat cutter on your own.

Sewing: Tablet Cover
A class for beginning sewers who can thread the machine and sew a little but need some direction to practice their skills. Make a cover for your iPad or Kindle that is fun and functional. Bring a yard of two quilting-weight cotton fabrics to class. Sewing machines provided but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.

Fused Glass Accessories
Learn the basics of fusing by creating glass cabochons. Attach them to jewelry blanks and leave with wearable art including a bracelet, ring and set of hair pins.

Students will be guided through all aspects of forming bowls, mugs, vases and more on the pottery wheel. Learn hand-pulling, glazing and finishing techniques. Open to absolute beginners as well as those with experience who would like to improve their technique and abilities.

Black History Month
Adinkra Painting Adinkra is a stamped cloth traditionally made by people in Ghana. The symbols in Adinkra each have a special meaning from unity and strength to faith and initiative in addition to representing proverbs. Tell your story by repeating or combining stamped symbols on fabric and leave with a personalized wall hanging.

Soap Making – Cold Process
Make quality, handmade soap from scratch. Learn the step-by-step process - from the selection of oils and fragrances and calculating lye amounts to picking out equipment. Lye safety will be emphasized (there are no pre-made synthetic bases in this class!) A messy but fun process so wear old clothing with a long-sleeved shirt. Leave class with about 1.5 pounds of soap.

Intermediate Knitting: Chunky Cowl
Do you enjoy the fashion stylings of the dystopian future? Knit an amazing chunky cowl inspired by Katniss Everdeen in “Catching Fire.” Knitters will learn a variety of techniques including herringbone stitch, i-cord and garment construction. Knitters should be able to knit and purl and wield large needles. A supply list will be provided upon registration.
Mondays beginning February 24, 6 - 7:30pm for 3 weeks
Sarah Carney Explore the basic tools of Photoshop. This class will be a slowly paced, step-by-step, follow-along class for the raw beginner. Get a handle on the basic functionality of this complicated program including: layers, cropping, filters, brushes, text and shapes.
Participants are encouraged to bring a laptop with Photoshop CS3 or higher. Otherwise, you are welcome to sit in and take notes.

Paint Your Own Pottery: Bubble Painting
This is sort of like blowing bubbles when you were a kid, but we do it with a straw and paint. The popped bubbles show up and make interesting patterns on the finished pieces.
