Paint Your Own Pottery: Cardinal and Gold Night

Join us for a fun exploration of techniques in “painting” bisque. Pick your piece and illustrate your Cyclone Pride! We will have samples for inspiration but your own ideas are always welcome too. Studio fee is $4 for ISU and $5 for public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick up. Pre-registration with payment is not required but a call to reserve a spot is recommended.

“Little Dresses for Africa” Work Weekend

Simple dresses made out of pillowcases provide relief and hope for the children of Africa. We will provide the supplies, but can use the hands of volunteers to assist with making the dresses. From cutting fabric and ironing to sewing, there is a place for anyone who has an hour or two to spare. Drop in to our community studio to help another community of children in the orphanages of Central Africa. www.littledressesforafrica.org

Wheel Pottery

Students will be guided through all aspects of forming bowls, mugs, vases and more on the pottery wheel. Learn hand-pulling, glazing and finishing techniques. Open to absolute beginners as well as those with experience who would like to improve their technique and abilities.

Glass Beads

Learn the process of sculpting glass rods by heating and melting the glass in the flame of a gas-powered torch. After practice, your lampworking skills will allow you to create pieces with detail and complexity that you can use in jewelry or other decorative ways.

Resin Jewelry

Try out one of the most diverse mediums to create jewelry. Capture ideas, inspiration, and memories with resin. We will have papers and fabric, but feel free to bring other items to class which could include thin or small objects, photos or special papers. Discover ways to create color and texture, and leave class with 5 pendants and start your journey through the endless possibilities of resin!

Join us for a fun exploration of techniques in “painting” bisque. Using jute twine and contrasting colors, create a circular pattern on your piece. We will have samples for inspiration but your own ideas are always welcome too. Studio fee is $4 for ISU and $5 for public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick up. Pre-registration with payment is not required but a call to reserve a spot is recommended.

Knitting

Learn the basics of knitting: cast-on, knit, purl, bind-off, rib stitch, increase and decrease techniques, pattern reading, gauge swatching, and picking up dropped stitches. Bring a pair of #7 or #8 single-point needles. Yarn will be provided.

Woodshop Orientation

For the beginner who wants to learn the fundamentals of woodworking equipment. Proper usage of the machinery will be covered, as well as woodshop safety. This class is required in order to use the woodshop on your own.

Drawing

Take this opportunity to learn and develop drawing skills, whether you are a beginner who likes to doodle or an artist with experience. Students will be guided through a variety of exercises to enhance your drawing technique including: line, perspective, light and shadow, and composition, while developing hand-eye coordination and confidence.

Middle Eastern Belly Dance

Lisa Rich McKelvey (Shiara) Come explore the music and movements of the Middle East with Shiara, an accomplished performer, choreographer and instructor, as your guide. Learn the basic movements used for any style of belly dance as well as a short dance routine that will help to solidify these concepts. Bring a scarf or shawl to tie around your hips and get ready to shake up your Wednesday night routine!

Belly Dance Challenge

A great way to increase your knowledge base while having fun and challenging yourself to be the best you can be. This class will include belly dance themed games, an obstacle course, trivia, drills and more! Each challenge is designed to train both your brain and your body, allowing you to sharpen your skills and deepen your understanding of this beautiful art form. Are you up for the challenge? (Completion of Shiara’s beginner level class or equivalent instruction for transfer students is required.) Wednesdays beginning January 29, 8:45 - 9:45pm for 6 weeks

Sewing: Infinity Scarf

Tis the season for scarves in Iowa! This is a super easy project and quick jump into the craft of sewing. Just bring a yard or two of quilting cotton, voile or linen fabric to class and leave with a great new accessory. Sewing machines provided but feel free to bring your own if you prefer.

Join us for a fun exploration of techniques in “painting” bisque. Using spirals of color and plastic wrap, create a tie-dye effect inside your new favorite bowl. We will have samples for inspiration but your own ideas are always welcome too. Studio fee is $4 for ISU and $5 for public to attend plus the cost of the bisque you select. Pottery will be fired within a week for you to pick up. Pre-registration with payment is not required but a call to reserve a spot is recommended.
