On Oct. 31, North Polk Middle School students attended “Taking the Road Less Traveled,” a conference sponsored by Women in Science and Engineering at Iowa State University. The purpose of the conference is to expose girls to career paths in science, technology, engineering and math. Mrs. Schwab and Mrs. DeBoer took 19 girls to the conference.

The students attended both career sessions and participated in hands-on activities. Some of the many classes offered during the conference were The Science of Healing Animals, Run Your Own Chocolate Factory, Engineering Challenge, Scientific Sleuthing, DNA Extraction and Toying with Technology.
