Ellie Begg of Huxley and Sydney Buchholtz of Cambridge have been chosen by Mathis-Wire Unit #233 of the American Legion Auxiliary, Cambridge, to attend the annual session of the Iowa American Legion Auxiliary Girls State, June 15-20, on Iowa State University’s campus. They were chosen to attend Girls State on the basis of interest, leadership and academics.

Sydney, the daughter of Michelle deYoung and Scott Buchholtz, attends Ballard High School and is involved with softball, tennis and cheerleading. She is interested in learning about biology, helping at church and spending time with friends and family.

Ellie is the daughter of Jeff and Michele Begg and also is a student at Ballard. She takes part in cheerleading, dance team, choir, band, FCA and Youth Group. In her extra time, she likes to run, hang out with friends and help others.

They are among the approximately 300 students, who have completed their junior year and will be attending Girls State. They will set up their own city, county and state governments and administer them according to Iowa law.

The culmination of the week is the installation of the newly elected state officials at the Stevens Auditorium on Friday, June 20. The flag presentation will start at 5 p.m., with the installation beginning at 5:15. The public is invited to attend the installation.
