Rick Baarda began serving as pastor to Cambridge United Methodist and Trinity United Methodist in Huxley on July 1.
Baarda and his wife, Debbie, moved to Huxley from Delmar. Rick graduated from Dubuque Theological Seminary in May. Debbie is a manager of Team Leads at Sedgwick, CMS in North Liberty.
Rick was raised in Sully and graduated from Lynnville-Sully High School in 1978.
“My call to ministry came when I was 19 years old,” Rick says. “I knew what God was calling me to do except I had a ‘better’ idea about what I wanted to do with my life and I disobeyed God’s calling at that time.”
Rick became a general contractor and says he told himself he would give lots of profits to further God’s purpose as he pursued his career. He also served as a youth director, Sunday school minister and ministered to others in many ways.
During those years Rick says God was shaping and molding him into a completely different person.
“I was no longer coveting the next big, profitable contract. My awareness was turning to my relationship and ministry for Christ,” Rick says.
In 2009 Debbie asked Rick why he wasn’t following God’s calling to be a pastor. Rick said he was thinking the same thing. The coincidence was one of many events that opened doors for Rick and Debbie to serve God.
“God used my disobedience to develop me into the person I needed to become. All my life experiences and growing in Christ have formed me—and are still forming me,” Rick said.
