Soccer: A top sport of the summer games

Subhead: Be a part of the tradition

The 2014 Summer Iowa Games youth soccer tournament will kick off on July 18 in three Ames locations. Registration deadlines are approaching. Visit www.IOWAGAMES.org to register now.

The final registration deadline for the youth soccer tournament (U6-U19) is Wednesday, June 11, online only.

This year marks the 28th annual Summer Iowa Games. The Olympic-style festival highlights over 15,000 athletes in 64 different sports. In 2013, over 2,300 athletes competed in the Iowa Games soccer tournament and the tradition continues.

“The Iowa Games largest team sport is youth soccer, attracting on average 190 teams each year. The Iowa Games gives youth soccer teams a chance to play between seasons and allows them to compete with teams across the state,” said Kim Abels, sports and special events director. “We are excited to bring these athletes, coaches and spectators to Ames.”

The youth soccer tournament will take place July 18-20, the main weekend of the Summer Iowa Games powered by the Iowa Food & Family Project. Soccer continues to be the top sport of the Iowa Games, with over 200 teams expected to compete this year.
