Story County Recorder Sue Vande Kamp announces retirement

Story County Recorder Sue Vande Kamp has announced that she will not seek re-election in 2014 and will retire at the end of her ninth term on Dec. 31 of this year. Vande Kamp has served as county recorder since 1979 and has worked in the recorder’s office since 1976.

The county recorder’s office manages all real estate filings; military records; birth, death and marriage records; and boat, snowmobile and ATV registrations. The office also processes passport applications under the direction of the U.S. Department of State. Under her leadership, the office has been modernized from hand-indexing and photocopying land records to the current computer indexing and scanning system.

Since taking office, Vande Kamp has been an active member of the Iowa County Recorders’ Association, serving as secretary, treasurer, vice president and president. She has also served on the Continuing Education Committee and received a “Recorders’ Certification” with the first graduating class this past fall, been a member of the Iowa Land Records governing board, served on the Iowa State Association of Counties Legislative Policy Committee and has served as the legislative liaison for the Recorders’ Association, representing recorders at the capitol for the past 20 years.

“I want to thank the citizens of Story County for placing their trust in me and allowing me to serve in this capacity for the past 36 years. One of my most important priorities has been to be an advocate for the public to protect their right of local access to land records and vital records. County government has played an important role in my life, and I will always cherish the friendships I have made over the years.”
