Every week in most Iowa communities, someone is widowed. Although friends and family gather for good support, there is another group of people who offer support in a way that few others can, because they, too, are widowed.
Widowhood is a unique experience; even when we want to show compassion and empathy, we still don’t know how a newly bereaved person feels. There is no arm of government that addresses their needs. There is, however, a “Wonderful Weekend” group that offers support.
Wonderful Weekend is the name that a group of widowed people gave to “getaway” weekends, which have been going on for more than 20 years ago.
Every year there are new and different activities. The upcoming Wonderful Weekend takes place on April 12 at the YMCA Camp in Boone. The YMCA Camp offers a beautiful setting, with rolling hills, and multiple trees and trails. It is a great place for reflection and rejuvenation. Activities will include conversation, a presentation by a Hospice bereavement counselor, group discussion, games and more. The day starts with a continental breakfast and ends with a light supper.
Those who would like to attend must be registered by April 5. Registration fee is $35.
