Two members of the Ballard softball team made the Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-state teams after helping Ballard go 27-7 and reach the Class 4A regional finals.
Senior pitcher Kenzie Ihle and junior center fielder Gabbie Scherle were rewarded for their efforts in helping Ballard turn in its third-consecutive 25-win season under head coach Staci Sniezek. The Bombers finished 25-11 and reached the 4A regional finals in 2013; in 2012, they went 35-9 and won the 3A state championship.
Ihle was named to the Class 4A first team. She went 26-7 with a 1.10 earned-run average, 181 strikeouts and 80 walks in 203 ⅔ innings.
At the plate Ihle was a tremendous power hitter as she hit .485 with a .540 on-base average and .832 slugging average. She finished with 11 doubles, eight home runs and 45 RBI.
Joining Ihle on the 4A first team were: Dallas Center-Grimes’ Paige Lowary, Jackie Peyton and Rachel Lowary; Solon’s Emily Ira, Mallory Madsen and Taylor Nearad; Carlisle’s Gabby Schnathorst and Taylor Davis; Norwalk’s Taylor Goode and Mel Stevens; West Delaware’s Hannah Cole; Davenport Assumption’s Clair Bird; North Scott’s McKenna Heim; Fort Dodge’s Mallory Kilian and Lexi Astor; Winterset’s Sammie Nicholson; Charles City’s Mara Forsyth; Fairfield’s Sydney Burnett; Cedar Rapids Xavier’s Erin Drahozal, Keokuk’s Taylor Lemon and Oskaloosa’s Alexis Groet.
Scherle was named to the 4A second team.
Scherle was one of the top leadoff hitters and base runners in 4A. She hit .543 with a .583 OBA and 36 runs and she swiped 27 bases in 30 chances.
In the field, Scherle had 27 putouts and two assists with just two errors.
DCG’s Steve Schlafke was named 4A Coach of the Year after leading the Fillies to their second straight state championship.
