Ballard’s Kohut-Jackson repeats as RRC champion

HUXLEY – The Ballard girls’ cross country team crowned an individual conference champion and the Bomber boys took fourth as a team at the Raccoon River Conference meet Monday at the Ballard Golf and Country Club in Huxley.

Sophomore Abby Kohut-Jackson repeated as the RRC girls’ individual champion for the Bombers.

After winning the title last year at Winterset, Kohut-Jackson finished Monday’s race in 15 minutes, 13 seconds to beat Boone freshman Dianna Slight by 31 seconds for the title. Kohut-Jackson’s time was just off her 15:10 showing on the same course a month earlier at the Ballard Invitational.

As a team the Ballard girls finished third out of seven teams with 68 points. Winterset won with 40 points and Boone was second with a score of 45.

Val Charter also placed in the top 10 as an all-RRC performer for the Bombers. She clocked in at 17:15 to take ninth.

Ashley Meldrum and Rachel Watters provided top-20 individual times and Talia Vespestad was just outside the top 20 as the final scored runner for Ballard. Meldrum clocked in at 17:38 to place 17th, Watters came in 20th a 17:53 and Vespestad was 21st with a 17:54 showing.

In the boys’ competition Ballard ended up fourth with 88 points. The Bombers were just one point behind Carlisle’s third-place score.

Luke Kohut-Jackson took fourth individually for Ballard behind three of the top 10 runners in 3A.

Luke’s 5-kilometer time in Huxley was 17:12. Boone’s Albert Meier and Chandler Austin – the Nos. 1 and 2 runners in 3A – were first and second at the RRC meet with respective times of 16:23 and 16:24.

Seventh-ranked Atem Akok of Perry took third at the RRC meet in 16:28.

Craig Jordan gave Ballard a second top-20 time at Huxley as he ran an 18:19 to place 15th. Kyle Schilling took 22nd in 18:38; Quentin Luke came in 23rd at 18:57 and Bryce Snell ran an 18:58 to place 24th as the other scored Bomber runners.

Boone – the No. 1 team in 3A – easily won the boys’ team title with 28 points. Perry took second with 74 points.
