Ballard girls blank St. Edmond

FORT DODGE – The Ballard girls’ tennis team had an easy time with Fort Dodge St. Edmond April 21 in Fort Dodge as the Bombers picked up five shutout victories, handing the Gaels an 9-0 thumping.

Ballard won four of the six singles matches by a 10-0 score. The Bombers added one 10-0 win in doubles play and they finished with two 10-1 triumphs on the day to easily improve to 5-0 on the season.

Emily Jurgensen, Alex Petersen, Ryle Cahill and Olivia Astarita each won by a 10-0 score in the Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 6 singles matches for Ballard. Meredith Ossian tacked on a 10-1 victory over St. Edmond’s Madison Tarbox in the No. 5 match.

In doubles play the Bombers’ No. 2 team of Petersen and Cahill blanked the Gaels’ tandem of Rachel Willerth and Tarbox by a 10-0 score. Ossian and Astarita won the No. 3 match over Min Hee Kang and Iris Baek by a 10-1 score.

The meet didn’t go completely without drama as Ballard’s Breanna Ripp won the No. 1 singles match in a thrilling 11-10 battle with St. Edmond’s Lily Petersen. Ripp and Jurgensen were also given a decent fight in the No. 1 doubles match by Petersen and Leah Hughet before prevailing by a 10-6 score.

Doubles: 1. Ripp and Jurgensen (B) defeated Petersen and Hughet (FDSE); 10-6. 2. Petersen and Cahill (B) defeated Willerth and Tarbox (FDSE); 10-0. 3. Ossian and Astarita (B) defeated Min Hee Kang and Baek (FDSE); 10-1.
