Ballard suffers two non-conference losses

SLATER - Ballard wrapped up the regular season in a rough way, losing its 11th consecutive game with a 4-1 loss to Gilbert July 15 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.

Tough pitching kept Ballard right in the thick of things until the seventh inning. Gilbert scored twice in the top of the second, but Ballard put up a run in the bottom of the inning, then neither team scored until the seventh.

In the top of the seventh Gilbert plated two runs and Ballard was unable to answer in the bottom of the inning, finishing the regular season at 11-16.

Ballard only had three hits in the game. Jacob Nethers was 2-for-4 and Mitchell Broer doubled and walked twice.

Marcus Johnson and Patrick Gray each walked once and Gray also stole a base.

Ballard threw four pitchers in the game.

Spencer Struve, Kai Reinertson and Jonny Luster threw two innings apiece. Struve gave up two earned runs on one hit with three walks and one strikeout in two innings, Reinertson allowed two unearned runs on one hit with two strikeouts and one walk in two innings and Luster threw two scoreless innings, giving up one hit and walk apiece and striking out one.

Nick Hartman also threw one inning, allowing one hit and one walk.

Dax Hatfield earned the win for Gilbert. He allowed one unearned run on two hits with five strikeouts and three walks in 6 โ…“ innings.

Evan Johnson doubled, scored and drove in a run and Zach Paul was 1-for-3 with an RBI for the Tigers.

SLATER - Ballard hung tough for four innings, then fell apart in an 8-1 non-conference loss to Dallas Center-Grimes July 14 at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.

The game was knotted at 1-1 through three innings. Neither team scored in the first two frames before plating one run apiece in the third.

DCG added a run in the top of the fourth, but Ballard was unable to answer. The Mustangs then broke the game open with a five-run outburst in the fifth, and the Bomber offense sputtered over the the last four innings to allow DCG to secure the victory.

Jacob Nethers doubled and drove in a run, Nathan Carlin was 1-for-2 with a walk and a run and Kobe Schulze, Marcus Johnson, Kenny Randolph and Mitchell Broer each singled once for the Bombers. Lane Volkman also drew a walk and Patrick Gray stole a base for the Bombers.

Coy Baker was the losing pitcher. He gave up seven runs - just one earned - on eight hits with five walks and four strikeouts in 4 โ…” innings.

Nick Hartman threw 2 โ…“ innings for Ballard, allowing one unearned run on two walks and no hits with five strikeouts.

Nate Osborn surrendered one earned run and struck out three and walked two in six innings to get the win for DCG. Tyler Pierson had one scoreless and hitless inning with one strikeout for the Mustangs.

Pierson was 3-for-4 with a double, run and RBI and Jacob Mueller singled, scored and drove in two runs to pace DCG on offense.
