Big second half carries Comet girls past Raiders

BAXTER – A strong performance from the Murphy twins helped North Polk topple Collins-Maxwell-Baxter, 58-34, Dec. 17 at Baxter.

Miranda and Megan Murphy combined for 46 points to help North Polk – then ranked 12th in Class 3A – improve to 6-2 overall and 5-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

CMB (0-8, 0-6) gave North Polk a good fight in the first half. The Raiders played well defensively over the first two quarters, only trailing 23-14 at the break.

But in the third quarter, North Polk got hot. The Comets put 25 points on the board in the period to double their lead and they never looked back.

North Polk shot 46 percent from the field and held CMB to 27-percent shooting. The Comets also won the turnover battle – forcing 12 steals to CMB’s five – but the Raiders controlled the glass by a 37-33 margin.

Miranda was North Polk’s leading scorer with 25 points. She hit 11 of 16 field goals, 2 of 3 3-pointers and her only foul shot, and also pulled down six rebounds and came away with three steals and two assists.

Megan netted 21 points after making 8 of 16 field goals, 2 of 5 3-pointers and 3 of 4 free throws. She also had two steals and assists apiece.

Hannah Becker added four points and seven rebounds and Maddy Hill had three points, five rebounds and two steals for North Polk. Riley Murphy finished with two points, four assists, four rebounds and two steals; Rachel Zimmermann chipped in two points, four rebounds and two assists and Rebecca Rimathe scored one point.

Lexi Breon led CMB with 11 points after hitting 3 of 8 3-pointers. She also had four assists, three rebounds and two blocks.

Abbie Haupert posted another double-double for the Raiders with 10 points and 11 rebounds. She also had two blocks and one steal.

Mackenzie Schmitz added six points, four assists and one steal; Bridget Hurley contributed four points, four rebounds and two steals and Mikayla Eslinger finished with three points and six rebounds for the Raiders.
