Bomber boys blow away Bluejays

HUXLEY – A monster first half carried the Ballard boys’ basketball team to a convincing 67-30 victory over Perry Friday in Raccoon River Conference action at Huxley.

Ballard completely overwhelmed Perry in the first half to put the game away by halftime. The Bombers scored at least 22 points in each of the first two quarters to build a 49-12 lead.

With the game well in hand, the Bombers were able to empty their bench in the second half as they easily improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in the RRC.

Ballard shot 44 percent from the field and held Perry to 29-percent shooting. The Bombers made 8 3-pointers, went 17 of 23 from the line, posted a 31-23 rebounding advantage and held the Bluejays without a 3-pointer.

Mason Edwards hit all four of his field-goal attempts – including two 3-pointers – and he went 5 of 6 from the line to finish with a game-high 15 points for Ballard. Edwards also had five rebounds and one steal.

Jacob Nethers went 5 of 7 from the field and 3 of 4 from 3-point range to net 13 points for the Bombers. Nethers also had four rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Mason Jensen also scored in double figures for Ballard with 10 points. He added five rebounds, two assists and one steal.

Nick Hartman just missed being the fourth Bomber with a double-digit scoring total as he had nine points and added four rebounds and one steal. Kolby Jensen and Jaden Moody scored four points apiece and Kobe Schulze, Nathan Carlin, Cole Wilson and Chase Seibert each chipped in three points.

Ben Daniels led Perry with 10 points, eight rebounds and one assist. Blake Lansing tacked on seven points, three steals and one assist for the Bluejays.

PELLA – Ballard couldn’t quite finish the job against Pella in non-conference play Dec. 10 at Pella as the Bombers struggled defensively in the fourth quarter, suffering a 65-59 loss.

The first three quarters were an even battle between the two teams. Ballard took a four-point lead after one quarter and then Pella outscored the Bombers 31-29 over the next two periods to pull within 45-43.

In the fourth quarter Pella kicked up its offense a notch, putting 22 points on the board to surge ahead to stay as Ballard only finished with 14 point over the final eight minutes.

Both teams shot the ball at nearly an even rate. Pella made 22 field goals at a 44-percent clip and Ballard canned 18 shots at a 38-percent clip. Pella was 5 of 15 and Ballard went 5 of 16 from 3-point range and the Little Dutch canned 16 of 22 free throws against the Bombers 18 of 23 showing from the line.

Rebounding ended in a standstill with both teams pulling down 28 boards. Pella finished with a slim 7-5 edge in steals.

Jacob Nethers, Mason Edwards and Mason Jensen each scored in double figures for Ballard in the loss.

Nethers scored a game-high 18 points after hitting 5 of 8 shots – including 3 of 5 3-pointers – and 5 of 6 free throws. He also had three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Edwards went 6 of 10 from the field and 4 of 4 from the line to net 16 points and he also pulled down seven rebounds. Jensen scored 10 points and he also had three assists and two steals.

Kolby Jensen just missed the double-figure mark with nine points and he also had two assists. Nick Hartman tallied two points and a team-best eight rebounds and Nathan Carlin and Jaden Moody chipped in two points apiece.

Isaac Naaktgeboren led a balanced Pella attack with 14 points, seven rebounds, two assists and one steal. Bryce Bortscheller added 13 points and four assists, Payson Vande Lune delivered 10 points and seven rebounds, Ryan VanWyk had nine points, Jordan Pingel finished with seven points and four assists and Seth Johnson tallied seven points, five steals and three assists for the Little Dutch.
