Bomber boys topple Cadets, Toreadors

HUXLEY – Good balance and efficiency helped the Ballard boys’ basketball team overcome a tremendous one-man show from Iowa Falls-Alden’s Casey Schlatter to pull off a 72-61 victory over the Cadets Saturday in Huxley.

Schlatter scorched Ballard with an amazing 40-point effort, but Ballard shot 50 percent from the field, 80 percent from the line and posted a 30-22 rebounding advantage to improve to 2-1 on the season.

Ballard led 36-28 at the half after outscoring Iowa Falls-Alden by four points in each of the first two quarters. The Bombers upped their lead to 10 points after three quarters and then kept the Cadets at bay the rest of the way.

The brother tandem of Mason and Kolby Jensen combined for 37 points to help offset Schlatter’s explosive performance. Mason had 21 points, five assists and five rebounds and Kolby hit 4 of 7 3-pointers, finishing with 16 points, and he added two assists and steals apiece.

Mason Edwards gave Ballard a quality performance inside as he posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds and added three assists. Nathan Carlin drilled all three of his 3-point attempts to total nine points; guard Jacob Nethers recorded seven points, four rebounds and two assists and Nick Hartman chipped in six points, six rebounds and two steals for the Bombers..

Schlatter hit 13 of 25 field goals, including 4 of 8 3-pointers, and he was 10 of 13 from the line for Iowa Falls-Alden. He also finished with 14 rebounds, four assists, four blocks and one steal.

Jacob Sundholm scored five points as the only other Cadet to top four points, and he tacked on three assists.

BOONE – A huge first half carried Ballard to a 67-46 road victory over Boone in its Raccoon River Conference opener Friday.

Ballard outscored Boone by at least nine points in each of the first two quarters to build an insurmountable 43-20 lead at the half. The Toreadors slowed the Bombers’ momentum in the second half, but they couldn’t make up much ground as Ballard improved to 1-1.

The Bombers shot 50 percent from the field, made 6 of 17 3-pointers and converted on 73 percent of their foul shots. Ballard also had 13 assists on 25 field goals and came away with eight steals on defense.

Mason Jensen scored 23 points on 11 of 17 shooting as the top Bomber scorer. Jensen also had four assists and steals apiece.

Jacob Nethers put up 13 points after making 4 of 5 field goals, both of his 3-point attempts and 3 of 4 free throws. Kolby Jensen added eight points and three assists, Nick Hartman delivered six points and rebounds apiece and Mason Edwards tallied four points, seven rebounds and two steals for the Bombers.

Bret Romig paced Boone with 16 points and he also had two steals. Danny Anderson netted eight points and Brett Slight and Sabin Hicks chipped in six apiece for the Toreadors.

NORWALK – A poor first half proved fatal for Ballard in a 67-48 loss to Norwalk in its season opener Dec. 3 at Norwalk.

Ballard was outscored by 13 points in the first quarter, and by halftime the Bombers trailed 42-24. A gutsy third quarter pulled Ballard within 11, but Norwalk regained its edge in the fourth to pull away.

The Bombers shot just 28 percent from the field. They only made 6 of 30 3-pointers and were just 12 of 22 from the line.

Norwalk displayed great efficiency, shooting 53 percent from the field, 45 percent from 3-point range and 75 percent from the line. Ballard did win the battle on the boards by a 33-28 margin and the Bombers registered six steals to the Warriors’ five.

Senior guard Mason Jensen netted a game-high 20 points for Ballard in the loss. Jensen also had eight rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Jacob Nethers finished with 11 points after hitting 3 of 7 3-pointers and he also dished out four assists for the Bombers. Nick Hartman tacked on four points and 10 rebounds and Kolby Jensen and Mason Edwards each had five points and two boards for Ballard.

Grant Wright paced a balanced Norwalk attack with 17 points and he also had four assists and three steals. Austin Lavelle, Nick Rasonke and Sonny Onken netted 11 points apiece and Onken also snared seven rebounds for the Warriors.
