HUXLEY – A dominant finish to singles play and a sweep in doubles competition enabled Ballard to topple North Polk, 6-2, in a rain-shortened girls’ tennis meet Monday at Huxley.
Ballard dropped the Nos. 1 and 2 singles matches, but came back to win the final four. With rain coming in, only the Nos. 4 and 5 doubles matches were completed, with Ballard taking both to claim victory in its opening meet of the season.
In singles play, Alex Petersen won the No. 3 match over North Polk’s Emily Merkle by an 8-3 score. Rylee Cahill claimed an 8-2 victory over Maddie Nelson in the No 4 match, Meredith Ossian gave the Bombers a win in the No. 5 match by an 8-4 margin over McClane Gill and Sydney Buchholtz defeated the Comets’ Brianne Schultz in the No. 6 match, 8-3.
Olivia and Hannah Astarita teamed to give Ballard a win in the No. 4 doubles match. They defeated North Polk’s Shelby Berkland and Vivi Scheublin by a decisive 10-2 margin. The Bomber team of Shania Schmidt and Nicole Kling rolled by the same score over the Comets’ Devon Blessman and Bekah Long in the No. 5 match.
