Bomber, Raider girls each nab eight medals at Bomber Relays

HUXLEY – Ballard totaled eight top-three finishes in Class A and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter matched that total in Class B at the Bomber Relays girls’ track meet Friday in Huxley.

Ballard produced one gold, four silver and three bronze medals on the day. The Bombers placed fifth out of eight teams in Class A with 72 points.

Gabby Scherle was the Bomber to bring home the gold and Hannah Jensen, Rachel Watters and Abby Kohut-Jackson each took second in an individual event for Ballard.

Scherle captured the Class A individual title in the long jump. Her best effort of 14 feet, 10.5 inches edged out the 14-9 by Gilbert’s Karli Sastetter for the victory.

In the 100-meter hurdles, Jensen clocked in at 17.71 seconds to edge Gilbert’s P.J. Vanderweide by .13 seconds for the silver. Carroll’s Katey Trecker won the event in :15.84.

Watters completed the 400 hurdles in 1:12.32 to earn her silver medal. Watters’ time was nearly two seconds faster than Vanderweide’s third-place showing and it only trailed the 1:10.23 run by Trecker.

Kohut-Jackson picked up her second-place finish in the 1,500. Kohut-Jackson ran a strong time of 4:52.87, but Gilbert’s Grace Gibbons ran a meet-record time of 4:42.02 to take the gold.

The distance medley was Ballard’s most successful relay event. The Bomber team of Sydney Smith, Ellie Godwin, Val Charter and Kohut-Jackson clocked in at 4:42.68 to place second.

Gilbert won the distance medley in 4:35.55 and DCG took third in 4:48.99.

Ballard also came in third in the 4 X 800, shuttle hurdle and 4 X 200 events.

In the 4 X 800 Ashley Meldrum, Alexis Scharfenkamp, Madison Lanza and Reagan Doty teamed to run an 11:35.75, and in the shuttle hurdle, Rachel Bruns joined Scherle, Jensen and Watters to run a :17.89. Jenna Moody, Haley Johnson, Madison McInroy and Kennedy Newell combined to run a 1:59.60 in the 4 X 200 for Ballard.

In Class B, CMB recorded 90 points to place third out of six teams. The Raiders produced one gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

Abbie Haupert earned CMB’s one event victory in the discus. Haupert peaked with a throw of 103-4 to beat out the 101-9 by Roland-Story’s Jenn Demiter for first.

The Raiders’ Mikayla Eslinger came in third in the discus with a throw of 99-9. Payge Jurgens added a third-place throw of 35-6 in the shot put.

Bridget Hurley and Mackenzie Schmitz each won an individual silver medal for CMB.

Hurley took second in the open 400 with a time of 1:04.43. South Hamilton’s Allyson Ervin won in 1:03.85.

Schmitz clocked in at :27.44 in the 200. Her time only trailed the :27.10 run by Roland-Story’s Kayla Johnston.

Schmitz added a fourth-place time of :13.18 in the 100.

Toni Spencer took fourth in the 200 and third in the 100 for CMB. Spencer ran a :28.43 in the 200 and :13.15 in the 100.

The 4 X 100 was CMB’s most successful relay event. Maddy Poage teamed up with Spencer, Hurley and Schmitz to run a :53.06 and place second.

CMB tacked on a third-place finish in the sprint medley. Poage, Jurgens, Bekah Pearson and Hurley joined up to run a 2:06.69.

Roland-Story won the Class B team title with 205 points, more than doubling Colfax-Mingo’s runner-up point total of 100.

Gilbert was the Class A team champions with 149 points and Carroll came in second with a score of 110.
