Bomber wrestlers go 2-3 at Waukee duals

WAUKEE – The Ballard wrestling team encountered several tough teams in going 2-3 at the Waukee Dual Invitational Saturday.

The Bombers defeated Waukee and Des Moines North/Hoover and they came up short against Johnston, Harlan and Benton Community as their dual record moved to 7-5 on the season.

Ballard whipped Waukee by a 61-18 score. The Bombers had nine wins by fall and they also picked up one decision and one major decision.

Ben Claussen (182 pounds), Tyler Kyhl (195), Alex Silberstein (285), Jed Miller (106), Nathan Macki (126), Mitchell Broer (132), Rachel Watters (138), Mark Goldberg (152) and Andrew Rasmussen (160) all won by fall for Ballard against Waukee. Bailey Heinen added an 11-4 victory over Noah Gratias at 113 and Kenton Brekke picked up an 18-6 major decision win over the Warriors’ Tyler Kubiak at 145.

The Bombers also clobbered North/Hoover, winning by a 58-12 margin.

Kyhl (220), Heinen, Macki, Broer, Derek Wright (138) and Brekke all earned a fall against Hoover. Goldberg tacked on a 16-6 major decision win over Thomas Swessinger.

Rasmussen, Claussen and Silberstein all received a forfeit versus North/Hoover.

Ballard nearly went 4-1 on the day. The Bombers’ losses to Harlan and Benton Community easily could’ve swung the other way on one match.

Ballard suffered a 36-33 loss to Harlan. A forfeit loss at 220 pounds proved to be the difference as Ballard held a 33-30 advantage on the mat.

Goldberg, Rasmussen, Macki and Broer all won by fall against Harlan. Claussen picked up an 8-4 win over Caleb Rihner, Silberstein earned a 9-3 decision over Dallon Bendorf and Watters tacked on a 3-1 victory over Michael Monson for Ballard’s other victories against Harlan.

The Bombers were handed a 39-34 setback at the hands of Benton Community. Forfeits again proved to be the difference as the Bombers gave up 12 free points, forfeiting at 170 and 220, and the Bobcats didn’t give up a single forfeit.

On the mat Ballard received falls from Kyhl (195), Macki, Broer and Wright. Heinen scored a 22-8 major decision over Colton David, Goldberg earned a 6-0 victory over Wyatt Streets and Silberstein won an 8-5 decision against Quintin Taylor.

Ballard also came close against Johnston. The Bombers fell by a 43-29 score and Johnston benefitted from the only two forfeits of the meet at 170 and 220.

Goldberg, Kyhl (195) and Silberstein each won by fall against Johnston. Broer picked up an 18-3 technical fall over the Dragons’ Shane Vaughan.

Brekke and Claussen both won by decision. Brekke picked up a 3-1 win over Johnston’s Noah Beebe and Claussen also won by a 3-1 score in sudden victory against Benjamin Wilson.

NORWALK – Ballard suffered its second dual loss of the season Dec. 17 as the Bombers traveled to Norwalk and suffered a 40-27 loss at the hands of the Warriors.

Ballard earned two pins, three major decisions and one victory by decision. The Bombers gave up five pins, one major decision and two decision losses, dropping to 5-2 on the season.

Easton Moody and Alex Silberstein picked up the victories by fall for Ballard. Moody pinned Norwalk’s Trysten Minnis in three minutes, 19 seconds at 220 pounds and Silberstein stuck Ryan Kennedy in 2:40 at 285.

Mitchell Broer, Mark Goldberg and Louie Howlett scored the major decision victories for Ballard. Broer took down Norwalk’s Ryley Smith by a 16-4 score at 138, Goldberg defeated Casey Rudolph by an 11-0 margin at 152 and Howlett pulled off a 19-9 win over Alan Moore at 126.

Bailey Hein was the other victor for Ballard on the night. He edged Norwalk’s Dylan Lane at 106 by sudden victory, 6-4.
