Bomber wrestlers go 2-3 at Webster City duals

WEBSTER CITY – The Ballard wrestling team went 2-3 at the Webster City Dual Invitational Saturday.

Going up against three larger schools in Ankeny Centennial, Cedar Rapids Xavier and Forest City, as well the No. 7 team in Class 2A Osage, Ballard wasn’t quite able to break even on the day. The Bombers moved to 9-8 in dual competition on the season at the conclusion of the tournament.

Ballard’s two victories were a 44-27 triumph over Ankeny Centennial and a 54-16 drubbing of Perry.

In the victory over Ankeny Centennial, the Bombers picked up pins from Kenton Brekke (152 pounds), Will May (170), Alex Silberstein (285), Bailey Heinen (106) and Ethan Estabrooks (120). Ben Claussen and Mitchell Broer gave Ballard victories by major decision as Claussen defeated the Jaguars’ Ethan Chipps by an 11-1 score at 182 and Broer pulled off a 13-1 triumph over Aaron Noce at 132.

Rachel Watters and Nathan Macki were both victorious by decision versus the Jaguars. Watters knocked off Grant Nehring by a 9-8 score at 145 and Macki scored a 5-0 win over Jace Williams at 126.

Against Perry, Ballard produced five victories by fall, one by technical fall, another by major decision and three by decision. The Bombers also received one forfeit against the Bluejays.

Tyler Kyhl (195), Easton Moody (220), Silberstein, Jed Miller (106) and Estabrooks picked up Ballard’s pins against Perry. Broer earned the technical fall by an 18-3 score over Jacob Thompson and Claussen prevailed by a 12-1 major decision over Kevin Lopez.

Macki scored an 8-2 win over Perry’s Gisaveri Niyibizi, Derek Wright picked up a 9-7 victory over Richie Cazares at 138 and May pulled off a high-scoring 18-14 triumph over Perry’s Eli Saemisch for Ballard’s other wins on the mat. Andrew Rasmussen picked up the Bomber forfeit win at 160.

Ballard dropped a close 42-35 decision to Forest City. The Bombers earned two pins and one victory by technical fall versus the Indians and they also received three forfeits.

Heinen (113) and Estabrooks produced the two Ballard pins and Broer scored a 15-0 technical fall against Forest City’s Derrick Wubben. May, Kyhl and Macki were the three Bombers to pick up a forfeit.

Ballard was also competitive against Cedar Rapids Xavier, losing by a 42-29 score. The Bombers received pins from Rasmussen, Kyhl, Heinen (113) and Macki, and Brekke received a forfeit.

Ballard lost one point against Xavier due to unsportsmanlike conduct at 220. Broer – ranked fifth at 132 in Class 2A by The Predicament – suffered a 12-6 loss against Xavier’s Clint Lembeck, who is rated fourth in 3A at 132.

Ballard suffered a 46-25 loss at the hands of Osage. Kyhl, Silberstein and Heinen (113) all won by fall and Miller prevailed by a 16-6 major decision over Osage’s Brody Wright.

Broer scored Ballard’s most impressive win against Osage. He went up against Brock Jennings – rated just ahead of him at No. 4 in 2A at 132 – and pulled off a 6-4 victory.
