Bombers’ Vincent loses two at state singles/doubles meet

Ballard loses to Red Oak in 1A substate final to finish 7-1

WATERLOO – Ballard’s Ryan Vincent ended an excellent career with an 0-2 day at the Class 1A boys’ state singles and doubles tournament at Byrne’s Park Tennis Center in Waterloo Friday.

Vincent opened up against top-seeded Aaron Chalstrom of Fort Dodge St. Edmond. Vincent ended up losing in straight sets – 6-0 and 6-0 – to the eventual state individual champion.

In the consolation round, Vincent was swept by Alexander Punj from Fairfield. Vincent suffered a 6-0 setback in the first set and then he fought hard in the second before losing by a 6-3 score.

Vincent ended his career with a 34-20 singles record and a 35-19 doubles mark. He was a two-time state qualifier after making it in doubles play with Peter Rietgraf last season.

NORWALK – The Ballard boys’ tennis team ended the season with a 5-2 loss to Red Oak in the first round of Class 1A substate play May 18 in Norwalk.

The Bombers went 2-4 in singles play and then lost the No. 2 doubles match to end the meet before the Nos. 1 and 3 doubles matches were completed. The lost was Ballard’s only one of the season as the Bombers finished with a 7-1 record.

Joe Kruger and Brett Hull picked up the two Bomber victories. Kruger won the No. 5 singles match over Red Oak’s Tanner Johnson and Hull got by Hayden Berry in the No. 6 match.

Bridgewater rallied from a 6-2 loss in his opening set with Red Oak’s Geoff Sellers in the No. 3 match. Bridgewater took the second set in a 7-6 battle, winning the tiebreaker by a 7-4 score, but he dropped the third set by a 6-4 margin.
