Bombers fall to No. 7 Jaguars, 57-38

ANKENY – The Ballard girls’ basketball team suffered its first loss of the season when the Bombers took on an Ankeny Centennial team ranked seventh in Class 5A Nov. 26 in Ankeny.

The game was an historical affair as it was the first regular season game for the new Ankeny Centennial program after the school opened this year. Ballard, ranked 10th in 4A, started off strong against a powerful Jaguar team, but the Bombers were unable to keep pace after the first quarter in falling by a 57-38 score.

Ballard (1-1) led 14-12 after one quarter, but Ankeny Centennial rallied to move in front by a 30-25 score at the half. The Jaguars pushed their lead to nine points through three quarters and they put the game away in the fourth by limiting Ballard to just five points in the period.

The Bombers struggled inside with the Jaguars as they were outrebounded, 23-13. Ankeny Centennial was also much more efficient in shooting 58 percent from the field compared to Ballard’s 39-percent showing.

Gabie Doud and Emily Knittel had solid individual outings to help keep Ballard within striking distance through three quarters.

Doud shot 7 of 13 from the field and 2 of 6 from the line in finishing with 16 points. She also had seven rebounds, two steals and one block.

Knittel netted 10 points after making 3 of 5 field goals and 4 of 6 free throws. She also dished out two assists.

Meredith Ossian scored four points, Charcey Petersen had three points and one assist, Kenzie Ihle registered three points, one assist and one steal and Alanna Dubberke chipped in two points, five assists and one block for Ballard.

Jaali Winters led Ankeny Centennial with 16 points and nine rebounds. Sarah Brandt added nine points and six assists for the Jaguars.
