ROLAND – The Ballard softball team split a pair of games against ranked opponents at the Kiwanis Invitational Saturday in Roland.

The Bombers defeated an AGWSR team rated No. 4 in Class 1A by a 2-1 score and they suffered an 8-6 loss to a Mount Vernon squad rated 13th in 3A. Ballard – ranked 10th in 4A – concluded the tournament with a 16-5 overall record.

The victory over AGWSR gave Ballard a needed boost to end the tournament after the heartbreaking loss to Mount Vernon earlier in the day. The Bombers took a 2-0 lead with a run in the second and another in the fourth, and they held off a Cougar rally attempt in the fifth to pull off the win.

Brooke Mallon singled and courtesy runner Jenna Moody scored on a grounder by Ellen Huxford for Ballard’s first run. Huxford also drove in Ballard’s other run to plate courtesy runner Madison McInroy following a double from Kenzie Ihle.

Annie Stolte doubled for Ballard’s only other hit of the game and she also walked and stole a base. Ihle was the winning pitcher as she went all seven innings and allowed one earned run on six hits with 11 strikeouts and four walks.

In the loss to Mount Vernon, the Bombers nearly pulled off a shocking comeback. They trailed 5-0 going into the seventh inning, after giving up a run in the third and four in the sixth.

But just when it appeared Ballard was dead in the water, the Bombers took advantage of two home runs to plate five runs in the seventh, tieing the score and forcing extra innings.

The momentum didn’t last into the eighth inning, though, as Mount Vernon plated three runs and Ballard only scored once.

Ihle and Sydne Struve both hit clutch homers for Ballard in the seventh. Ihle finished 2-for-3 with three RBI and Struve was 1-for-4 with three RBI.

Mallon ended up 2-for-3 with one run, Gabbie Scherle picked up a single, Stolte and Alex Petersen both walked twice and Olivia Hall picked up one free pass. Mallon, Huxford, Petersen and Moody each scored once for the Bombers.

Ihle took the loss on the mound, despite giving up just two earned runs. She allowed nine hits and struck out seven with five walks.

Marissa Roe gave up five earned runs with five walks and no strikeouts in eight innings to earn the win for Mount Vernon. Alyssa Maddocks was 3-for-4 with a double and two runs and RBI apiece, Annie See and Hannah Wieditz both scored twice and Roe singled and knocked in two runs for the Mustangs on offense.
