Bombers go 2-0 at Ballard Invitational

SLATER – The Ballard baseball team regrouped from a pair of Raccoon River Conference losses to go 2-0 at the Ballard Invitational Saturday at Nite Hawk Field in Slater.

After back-to-back losses to Carroll and Boone, the Bombers whipped Carlisle and Nevada on Saturday to regain their earlier momentum from the season and improve to 11-5 overall.

Ballard defeated Carlisle by a 7-3 score. The Bombers trailed 1-0 after three innings, but then went on a hot streak with two runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and two more in the sixth to take control.

Ballard ended up with seven hits against the Wildcats. Matt Poots was 2-for-3 with a double, run and RBI; Coy Baker finished 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI; Jacob Nethers doubled and knocked in two runs and Kenny Randolph and Isaiah Johnson both went 1-for-2 with an RBI.

Spencer Struve walked twice, scored once and drove in a run; Nathan Carlin and Mitchell Broer both walked and scored and pinch runner Marcus Chieves crossed the plate once.

Nick Hartman gave up one run on two hits with one strikeout and walk apiece in two innings as the Bomber starter and Jaden Moody threw two scoreless innings, allowing two hits with three strikeouts.

Ballard shut out Nevada by a 7-0 score.

The game wasn’t as easy as the Bombers’ 16-1 win at Nevada earlier in the week, but it was still a decisive triumph for Ballard as the Cubs only mustered three hits. The Bombers scored one run apiece in the second and fourth frames and two in the third to build a comfortable early cushion; then they broke the game open with three runs in the fifth.

Jonny Luster gave up two hits with an impressive nine strikeouts against just one walk in six innings to earn the victory for the Bombers. Carlin gave up one hit and struck out one with no walks in one inning of relief.

At the plate Ballard finished with eight hits and the Bombers took advantage of eight walks issued by Cub pitcher Colton Tibedeau. Nethers turned in a big game offensively for Ballard as he went a perfect 3-for-3 with a double, walk, two steals, two runs and an RBI.

Carlin went 1-for-3 with a walk, run, steal and RBI; Randolph was 1-for-4 with a run; Baker finished 1-for-2 with a walk; steal and RBI; Luster went 1-for-2 with a walk and two RBI and Poots was 1-for-4 with a steal and a run.
