CARLISLE – The Ballard baseball team couldn’t quite finish off a comeback attempt against Carlisle Friday in Carlisle as the Bombers were dealt a 4-3 loss by the Wildcats in Raccoon River Conference play.
Ballard fell behind 3-1 after three innings. The Bombers pulled within one run by the end of the fourth inning, but Carlisle plated a run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-2 lead into the final inning of regulation.
In the top of the seventh Ballard mustered one run, but the Bombers couldn’t get a second score to tie the game as they fell to 11-6 overall and 4-4 in the RRC.
The Bombers totaled four hits on offense. Coy Baker smacked a solo home run; Jacob Nethers doubled, walked and scored; Spencer Struve singled and drove in a run and Nathan Carlin was 1-for-4 with a steal.
Nick Hartman also knocked in a run and Marcus Johnson and Matt Poots each drew a walk for the Bombers.
Hartman took the loss on the mound as he allowed three runs – two earned – on two hits with two walks in three innings. Jaden Moody threw two scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out two and Baker allowed one run on two hits with one strikeout and no walks in one inning of work.
Peyton Stephens went 2-for-3 with a double, walk, steal and two runs to lead Carlisle. Andrew Smith was 2-for-3 and Max McCay and Zethan Wycoff both singled and drove in a run.
Tryston Durham was the winning pitcher for Carlisle. He allowed two earned runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts and walks apiece in four innings.
