HUXLEY – The Ballard boys’ tennis team picked up its first victory of the season Friday as the Bombers blanked Des Moines North, 11-0, in their home opener.
Ballard dominated singles play, winning 60 sets to North’s 14, improving to 1-1 on the season.
Bryce Hull scored a 10-0 shutout over North’s Nick Lovan in the No. 3 match. Joe Kruger and Nathan Carlin gave the Bombers identical 10-1 wins over the Polar Bears’ Mike Pham and Kevin Li in the Nos. 1 and 2 matches respectively.
Devin Wargo added a 10-2 victory over North’s Calvin Lovan in the No. 4 match. Anthony Lettow claimed a 10-6 win over Tim Hanson in the No. 5 match and Jacob Herrin scored a 10-4 triumph over Brennan Whisler in the No. 6 match.
In doubles play Ballard had a tougher time, but still went unblemished in four matches.
Kruger and Carlin had the strongest showing for Ballard in doubles play as they won the No. 1 match over Pham and Calvin Lovan by a 10-2 score. Herrin and Joel Schoening picked up a 10-5 victory over North’s team of Cesar Marful and Jalin Newsome in the No. 4 match for the Bombers’ second-most decisive win of doubles competition.
In the No. 3 doubles match. Cole Wilson and Brody Echer were given all they could handle by North’s team of Whisler and Li before pulling off an 11-9 win. Sam Kruger and Jacob Torkelson won a tough 10-8 match over the Polar Bears’ tandem of Nick Lovan and Hanson in the No. 2 match.
Darrin Ward and Josiah Reeves were awarded a forfeit victory for Ballard in the No. 5 match.

DES MOINES – Ballard opened the season with a tough 6-5 loss at Des Moines East April 8 in Des Moines.
The two teams split singles competition and Ballard took the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles matches. But East claimed victory in the last three doubles matches to surge ahead and hand the Bombers a season-opening loss.
In singles play Joe Kruger and Nathan Carlin won the Nos. 1 and 2 matches for Ballard. Kruger cruised to 6-4 and 6-0 victories over Jason Jeffries and Carlin also won in straight sets, defeating Michael Toruno by scores of 6-0 and 6-2.
Ballard’s only other win in singles competition came in the No. 4 match. Devin Wargo swept East’s Blake Sunkle, 6-0 and 6-2.
Anthony Lettow nearly picked up a win in the No. 5 match over East’s Colton Hofer, but after splitting the first two sets Hofer won the tiebreaker in a 10-8 battle.
Doubles play saw Ballard again claim victory in the Nos. 1 and 2 matches.
Kruger and Carlin whipped Jeffries and Sage Torres by scores of 6-1 and 6-4 in the No. 1 doubles match. Bryce Hull and Wargo teamed up to give Ballard a hard-fought win over East’s team of Toruno and Sunkle in the No. 2 match as the Bomber team won the first set, 6-2, lost the second in a 7-6 battle and came back to claim a 10-4 triumph in the decisive third set.
Ballard won one set in each of the last three matches, but the Bombers were unable to finish the job each time.
In the No. 3 doubles match, East’s team of Hofer and Jay Williams won the first set, 6-3, then overcame a second-set 6-4 loss to Ballard’s team of Anthony Lettow and Cole Wilson by winning the third and decisive set, 10-4.
East’s Kyle Waddin and Jacob Dawson picked up a 7-6 win in the opening set versus Ballard’s Jacob Torkelson and Jacob Herrin in the No. 4 doubles match. Torkelson and Herrin rebounded for a 6-2 victory in the second set, but the East duo came back for a clinching 10-7 triumph in the third set.
In the No. 5 doubles match, East’s team of Scott Son and Jacob Her opened with a 6-1 win over Ballard’s Brody Echer and Darrian Ward. Echer and Ward came back to claim a 6-2 win in the second set, but East again found a way to win the decisive third set as Son and Her pulled off a 10-8 win.
