Collins-Maxwell-Baxter senior Zach Samson was selected to participate in the 42nd-annual Iowa Shrine Bowl held in July at Cedar Falls.
Samson, the son of Brian and Sherry Samson of Baxter, is carrying on a tradition for both the Raider program and his family.
“I’m really excited,” Samson said. “You get to play with a bunch of different people from around Iowa, plus you get to see the good side of the Shrine throughout the week leading up to the game.”
“It is a great honor for Zach to be chosen,” CMB head football coach Rob Luther added. “There are so many outstanding players in our state. For these coaches to feel he is one of the best is a testament to Zach’s ability and his drive.”
CMB has had six players selected to participate in the Shrine Bowl. Among those former CMB Shrine Bowl performers is Zach’s older brother Danny, who partook in the 2009 game.
“He basically told me to just live in the moment,” Zach said. “Enjoy everything that comes to you and take as much advantage of it as you can get.”
Samson will play on the defensive line for the South Squad.
Samson had 29 tackles, two sacks and two fumble recoveries in his senior year. He also compiled 1,718 yards and 18 touchdowns passing and 844 yards and 13 touchdowns rushing at quarterback on offense.
“It’ll be good to just see the 4A aspect of it; 3A, 1A, A, eight-man,” Zach said. “Every class is represented so it’ll be nice to see the different levels and the different type of people I’m going to be competing with.”
The 2014 Shrine Bowl will take place at the UNI-Dome on the University of Northern Iowa Campus on July 26. The game is set to begin at 4 p.m.
