BAXTER – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter and Ballard girls’ track teams combined to win six events at the Raider Coed Invitational as both teams placed in the top three April 15 in Baxter.

CMB claimed two gold medals on the evening. The Raiders also picked up four silver medals and one bronze, racking up 80 points to take second behind South Hardin’s score of 119.

“Tonight I saw a lot of enthusiasm and determination from our girls that I haven’t seen all season,” CMB head coach Jerry Meinerts said. “They were high-fiving, hugging and cheering their teammates on and that led to a much better performance in the field events and on the track. We also won the battle at the tape as well. Instead of getting passed the last 10 meters, we were the ones doing the passing. I’m really proud of what our team did tonight.”

Bridget Hurley won an individual gold for CMB. She won the 400-meter dash in one minute, 3.41 seconds, just edging out the 1:03.80 run by Colfax-Mingo’s Dakota Hostetter.

The Raiders also took first in the 4 X 100 relay. Maddy Poage, Toni Spencer and Mackenzie Schmitz joined Hurley to run a time of :53.60 to easily beat out Colfax-Mingo’s :54.04 for first.

Poage and Hurley were also part of CMB’s runner-up sprint medley team. Payge Jurgens and Abbie Haupert ran the other two legs as the Raiders finished in 2:04.44 to trail only Saydel’s 1:59.44.

CMB added a bronze medal in the 4 X 200. Poage, Schmitz and Spencer teamed with Bekah Pearson to run a 1:57.33.

Jurgens, Poage and Schmitz all won an individual silver medal.

Jurgens took second in the shot put with a throw of 34 feet, four inches. West Marshall’s Jennifer Davis won with a toss of 39-10.5.

Poage was runner-up in the high jump. Poage’s best jump was 5-1 as she trailed only the 5-3 effort by South Hardin’s Sarah Boomgarden.

Schmitz took the silver in the 100. Her time of :13.13 came in behind Boomgarden’s :12.97 showing and it was just ahead of the :13.20 run by Madrid’s Ines Eckert.

Ballard tied West Marshall for third out of nine scored teams with 69 points. The Bombers claimed four gold medals and one silver medal.

Gabby Scherle, Rachel Watters and Abby Kohut-Jackson all won an individual gold for the Bomber girls.

Scherle was the champion of the long jump. Her best jump of 14-8.75 was just over six inches better than the runner-up jump by South Hardin’s Kayla Prosser.

Watters won the 400 hurdles. She crossed the finish line in 1:13.57 to easily beat out the runner-up time of 1:15.87 by Saydel’s Emma Bowman.

Kohut-Jackson took first in the 800. Kohut-Jackson crossed the finish line in 2:24.08 to beat out Saydel’s Liz Miklus (2:28.34) for the gold.

Ballard also claimed victory in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Scherle and Watters were joined by Rachel Bruns and Hannah Jensen to run a winning time of 1:16.51. That was just fast enough to edge Madrid’s runner-up time of 1:16.64.

The Bombers tacked on a silver medal in the distance medley.

Sydney Smith, Ellie Godwin and Val Charter joined up with Kohut-Jackson to run a 4:36.82. Saydel finished just head of Ballard in the event with a time of 4:33.40.
