CMB, Ballard place 1-2 at Norsemen Relays

STORY CITY – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter and Ballard ended up the two best teams at the Norsemen Relays boys’ track meet Friday in Story City.

CMB laid waste to the rest of the field. The Raiders won six gold medals and also picked up two medals in six events as they scored 176 points, more than doubling Ballard’s runner-up score of 86.5.

Field events belonged to CMB as the Raiders took first and second in three and second and third in the other.

Zach Samson won both the shot put and discus for the Raiders. Patrick Girard was second in the shot and Clayton Weltha grabbed the silver in the discus.

Samson’s best throw in the shot was 56 feet three inches and he peaked in the discus at 150-4. Girard topped out at 49-7 in the shot and Weltha’s best discus toss was 143-1.5.

Bryce Kemp and Zach Huffaker took the top two spots in the long jump for CMB. Kemp won with an impressive jump of 20-10.75 and Huffaker’s runner-up effort was 19-11.25.

Hunter Gunderson won the silver medal in the high jump after clearing 6-0 and Joey Nissen was third with a jump of 5-6. Ogden’s Grant Heineman won with a jump of 6-1.

On the track, CMB won both individual hurdle events.

Kemp took the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 15.27 seconds – winning by 1.5 seconds. Nissen was third in :17.19.

Jordan Coughenour easily won the 400 low hurdles. Coughenour clocked in at :56.89 to beat South Hamilton’s Jacob Ratzke by nearly five seconds for first.

Coughenour also won the open 400 over Huffaker. Coughenour ran a :53.68 and Huffaker clocked in at :55.43.

Mark Deutsch came in second in both the 3,200 and 1,600. Deutsch’s 3,200 time of 10:26.42 beat Ogden’s Trey Thompson by over 16 seconds for runner-up behind Ballard’s Luke Kohut-Jackson.

In the 1,600, Deutsch ran a 4:55.93 to come in just behind Kohut-Jackson.

Seth Balke added a bronze medal in the 800 for CMB with a time of 2:13.01.

The Raiders’ best relay performance came in the shuttle hurdle. The team of Nick Little, Brady Stover, Nissen and Austin Moorman produced a time of 1:05.63 to finish second to Ballard.

CMB’s 4 X 800 team of Noah Cather, Kyle Cather, Seth Balke and Creighton Caple claimed a bronze medal after finishing in 8:57.81.

Ballard won four events on the evening.

Kohut-Jackson won the 3,200 in 10:23.45 and the 1,600 in 4:53.97. The Bomber shuttle hurdle team of Mason Edwards, Sam Upah, Zach Upah and Patrick Gray claimed its gold medal in 1:03.39.

Ballard also took first in the 4 X 400. Kobe Schulze, Tyson Prichard, Kaleb Odden and Isaiah Johnson teamed to run a 3:37.86 and edge Roland-Story’s 3:38.64 for the win.

Edwards was runner-up to Kemp in the 110 highs with a time of :16.85. Schulze won a bronze in the 400 lows after crossing the finish line in 1:01.96.

Pritchard edged Kemp for third in the 100. Pritchard ran a time of :11.48 to top Kemp’s :11.56 showing.

Ballard claimed silver in the 4 X 200. Johnson, Odden, David Konfrst and Pritchard ran a time of 1:36.15 to come in behind only the 1:35.28 run by Woodward Academy.

The Bomber distance medley team earned a bronze medal with a time of 3:57.40. Johnson, Odden, Edwards and Max Stoltz finished a little over five seconds behind South Hamilton’s winning time and less than three seconds in back of Roland-Story’s runner-up effort.

Ballard’s best finish in field events was fifth place.

Edwards took fifth in the high jump with a jump of 5-4. Kenny Randolph and Conner Pietsch also came in fifth in the shot put and discus with respective throws of 39-10 and 116-5.5.
