COLLINS – A brutal first inning did in the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team versus defending Heart of Iowa Conference champion North Polk June 5 in Collins as the Raiders were dealt a lopsided 14-0 loss in five innings.
North Polk erupted for a huge 11-run outburst in the first inning to wrap up the game almost as quickly as it started. The Comets added two more runs in the third and one in the fifth before the game was called due to the 10-run rule.
Zach Samson took the loss after giving up 11 runs on five hits with four walks in one inning. Nate Bishop gave up three earned runs with three strikeouts and walks apiece in four innings for the Raiders.
Austin Hillebo earned the win for North Polk. He threw all five innings and tossed a one-hitter with five strikeouts and no walks.
Brady Stover singled in two at-bats for the only CMB hit.
Grant Lang, Reed Smith and Grant Schiltz each picked up two hits for North Polk. Lang homered and drove in six runs and Smith doubled and knocked in three runs.
The loss put CMB at 2-4 both overall and in the HOIC.

JEFFERSON – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter earned its second shutout victory in a row June 4 with a 2-0 triumph over Greene County in Jefferson.
Two days after handing Nevada a 5-0 loss for its first victory of the season, CMB received another great pitching performance to get past Greene County. Brady Stover followed up a great pitching performance from Seth Balke versus Nevada with an absolutely dominant display against Greene County.
Stover struck out an amazing 17 batters and he only gave up one hit, going the full seven innings. He also finished with five walks in an overpowering seven-inning performance to earn the victory.
On offense CMB scored both of its runs in the top of the sixth inning. Balke and Zach Samson both reached base and scored, and Creighton Caple came through with an RBI.
Samson, Caple, Stover and Jacob Stratton each had one single for CMB and Balke drew one walk.
Riah Nelson was the losing pitcher for Greene County. He struck out eight and walked one in seven innings.
Jordan Callen singled once for Greene County’s only hit.
