MAXWELL – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ basketball team picked up its first victory of the season Saturday against Colo-Nesco as a 14-4 run over the final five minutes gave the Raiders a 57-52 comeback win.

CMB trailed 48-43 with less than five minutes to go in the fourth quarter when Zach Samson put back a missed shot to start the Raiders’ big finishing spurt. Bryce Kemp followed with a basket and with 3:08 remaining, Seth Balke hit a 15-foot jumper to give the Raiders a 49-48 lead.

Tommy McDonald drilled his third 3-pointer of the game to push CMB’s advantage to four points with 2:26 remaining. A Cole Ozbun drive pulled Colo-Nesco within two heading into the final minute of regulation.

Senior guard Austin Moorman then came up big at the line. Moorman hit the front in of three consecutive one-and-one foul shooting situations – making 4 of 6 free throws in that stretch – to push CMB’s lead to 56-52 with 14 seconds left.

Moorman then hit another foul shot with six seconds left, following an offensive rebound, to ice the game.

“I was really nervous, but we needed someone to step up,” Moorman said of his big free throws. “I guess I was that guy.”

Moorman finished with 13 points and four assists to help CMB improve to 1-2 on the season. The Raiders trailed 25-23 at the half, rallied to take a 37-32 lead midway through the third quarter, and then hit a dry spell offensively to allow Colo-Nesco to surge ahead in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.

Samson, Galloway and Balke all joined Moorman in coming up with big baskets for CMB in the second half.

Samson had 12 points on 5 of 6 shooting from the field and he added nine rebounds and two steals. Galloway was 3 of 4 from 3-point range, scoring 11 points, and Balke ended up with nine points, two assists and two steals.

“It all came down to the team,” Moorman said. “They’ve got to get some credit. I’m very happy with my teammates.”

Kemp added six points and six rebounds to help get CMB a much-needed victory after losing to Saydel and Gilbert to open the season.

“This sets us on track,” Moorman. “We’re going to keep improving from this game. We learned a lot from it.”

Colo-Nesco dropped to 2-1 with the loss.

The Royals only had six turnovers and they outrebounded the bigger Raiders, 28-27. But they only made 15 field goals and two 3-pointers.

Ozbun and Christian Reischauer combined for 29 points for Colo-Nesco in the loss. Ozbun had14 points, seven rebounds, four assists and two steals and Reischauer netted 15 points after making 9 of 10 free throws and three field goals and he added six rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals.
