Raider SB team loses 10-9 slugfest
SAYDEL – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter softball team dropped a heartbreaker to Saydel in Heart of Iowa Conference play May 24.
The Raiders gave up two runs in the bottom of the seventh to drop a 10-9 decision to the Eagles.
CMB led 9-8 going in to the bottom of the seventh. A five-run fifth inning put the Raiders up 7-6, and after Saydel tied up the game in the bottom of the inning, CMB scored two runs to the Eagles’ one in the sixth to take the lead.
Taylor Ross led a balanced 10-hit CMB attack on offense by going 3-for-4 with three runs and a steal. Cheyanne Warne walked, homered and drove in two runs and Cortney Ubben doubled in two runs as the top power hitters for the Raiders.
Payge Jurgens went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI and Megan Ritter finished 1-for-3 with a walk and two runs for CMB. Mikayla Eslinger was 1-for-3 with a steal, run and RBI and Brittany Peterson and Abbie Haupert each connected for one single.
Warne took the loss as she allowed five earned runs on 10 hits with five walks and four strikeouts in six innings. Annika Hofbauer was the winning pitcher for Saydel as she allowed nine runs and had seven strikeouts and four walks in seven innings.
The loss put CMB at 0-5 overall and 0-2 in the HOIC.

COLLINS – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter dropped both ends of a doubleheader with Oskaloosa May 23 in Collins.
The Raiders suffered losses by scores of 8-5 and 10-0.
In the 8-5 setback CMB fell behind 6-0. The Raiders scored twice in the fourth and three times in the sixth, but couldn’t make up the difference.
Cheyanne Warne went 3-for-4 with a double and solo home run for CMB in the loss. Cortney Ubben was 1-for-3 with an RBI, Abbie Haupert singled and scored and Taylor Ross, Brittany Peterson and Anna Peters each had one single for the Raiders.
Payge Jurgens and courtesy runners Mikayla Eslinger and Heather Jessen each scored once for CMB and Haupert and Peters stole one base apiece.
Warne was the losing pitcher after going all seven innings and allowing four earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts and four walks.
Kylee Silliman took the win for Oskaloosa as she gave up three earned runs and tallied four strikeouts and no walks in seven innings. Peyton Zickefoose was 2-for-4 with a double, run and two RBI, Callie Arnold went 2-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI and Shawni Willis finished 2-for-4 with a run and a steal for the Indians.
Not much went right for CMB in the other outing. The Raiders only put up two hits and they surrendered at least one run per inning in a game that was called after five frames due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Peterson and Becky Williams each singled for the two Raider hits. Warne and Ubben drew one walk apiece.
Heather Jessen was the losing pitcher for the Raiders. She threw all five innings and gave up seven earned runs on 11 hits with five walks and one strikeout.
Alexis Groet earned the win for Oskaloosa as she had nine strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Willis was 2-for-2 with a double, two runs and three RBI and Kylie Hill went 3-for-3 with two runs, a double and two RBI for the Indians on offense.
