CMB finishes 11-7 in HOIC

BAXTER – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ basketball team couldn’t make up for a slow start in a 71-59 loss to Prairie City-Monroe Friday in Baxter.

The Raiders struggled on both ends of the court in the first quarter as they were outscored 19-8. By halftime their deficit had grown to 40-26.

CMB regrouped and played a better all-around game in the second half. The Raiders outscored the Mustangs over the final two quarters, but they could only shave two points off their deficit in finishing 11-7 in the Heart of Iowa Conference and falling to 15-7 overall.

PCM shot at a strong 56-percent clip from the field. The Mustangs also made 8 of 13 3-pointers.

CMB also did well from long range – converting 7 of 19 shots from behind the arc. The Raiders were a strong 16 of 20 from the line as well and they outrebounded the Mustangs by a 27-20 margin.

In the end CMB couldn’t overcome the difference in accuracy from the field. The Raiders shot 43 percent overall – making nine fewer shots than the Mustangs.

Bryce Kemp had 16 points and 11 rebounds and Zach Samson finished with nine points, 10 rebounds, two assists and two steals for CMB. Austin Moorman added 11 points and Joey Nissen scored nine.

Logan Gilman netted 20 points and Dillon Bruxvoort chipped in 18 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals for the Mustangs, who improved to 17-4 overall and finished second to South Hamilton in the HOIC at 15-3. Ryan Jennings tacked on 13 points and three assists for PCM.

STORY CITY – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter never hit its stride versus Roland-Story Feb. 11 in Story City as the Raiders were dealt a 64-53 Heart of Iowa Conference loss by the Norsemen.

CMB played the Norsemen even in the first quarter, but the Raiders sputtered offensively in the second period to fall behind 27-20 at the half. The third quarter saw CMB play solid ball to cut the deficit to five and in the fourth period, the Raiders picked up the pace offensively.

But Roland-Story also stepped up its game over the final eight minutes. The Norse put 26 points on the board in the fourth quarter to pull away.

CMB hit 7 of 19 3-pointers, but the Raiders only shot 41 percent overall from the field and they made only 6 of 12 free throws. Roland-Story went 18 of 25 from the line and the Norse also shot 47 percent overall from the field and made six 3-pointers.

Zach Samson and Seth Balke both netted 14 points and Austin Moorman scored 10 for CMB. Samson also had nine rebounds, Balke hit 4 of 5 3-pointers and contributed six rebounds and five assists, and Moorman dished out six assists and came away with three steals.

Joey Nissen added seven points. Bryce Kemp was held to four points, but he did have three assists and two blocks.

Zach Hovick scored a game-high 23 points for Roland-Story. Hovick hit 3 of 4 3-pointers and 8 of 10 free throws and he also came away with three steals.

Ben Clark added 17 points, eight assists, five rebounds and two steals for the Norsemen.
