GILBERT – A strong second half wasn’t enough for the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls’ basketball team against Gilbert Friday in Gilbert as the Raiders suffered a 50-30 loss at the hands of the Tigers.

CMB fell behind by a big 33-11 margin at the half. The Raiders regrouped to outplay Gilbert in each of the final two quarters, but the huge deficit was just too big to overcome as they dropped to 4-11 on the season and 2-9 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

CMB shot just 32 percent from the field compared to Gilbert’s 44-percent showing. The Raiders also made three fewer 3-pointers and three fewer free throws than the Tigers.

BAXTER – Turnovers and sluggish shooting did in Collins-Maxwell-Baxter versus Saydel Jan. 14 as the Raiders couldn’t overcome a bad third quarter in a 49-29 loss at Baxter.

CMB only trailed 22-17 at the half. But in the third quarter everything fell apart as Saydel outscored the Raiders by 17 points to put the game away.

The Raiders finished with too many turnovers to stay competitive as Saydel totaled 19 steals and CMB only had four. That helped Saydel get off nearly twice as many field goal attempts (66 to 35).

CMB did a good job defensively, limiting Saydel to 27-percent shooting from the field, and the Raiders also won the rebounding battle by a 43-39 margin. But the Raiders only converted 29 percent of their field goals and they were just 8 of 16 from the line.

Lexi Breon had 12 points and three assists and Abbie Haupert delivered nine points, nine rebounds and four blocks for CMB in the loss.
