CMB girls start 0-2

STORY CITY – Inconsistency on offense hurt the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls’ basketball team in a 45-22 loss at Roland-Story Nov. 26.

The Raiders only made eight field goals all game – connecting on just 22 percent of their shots. CMB also struggled at the line in going just 2 of 7 from the charity stripe.

CMB scored less than 10 points in three different quarters. The Raiders trailed 25-10 at the break and then had their best stretch – outplaying the Norse in the third quarter to pull within 30-20.

But the Raider offense went flat again in the fourth quarter. CMB netted just two points over the final eight minutes to allow Roland-Story to pull away as the Raiders dropped to 0-2 on the season.

A lack of balance played a big part in CMB’s offensive woes. Nearly all the Raider scoring production came from guard Lexi Breon as the Norse did a great job containing star CMB center Abbie Haupert, who was held without a field goal.

Breon scored 16 points on the night as she made 6 of 13 field goals and 4 of 9 3-pointers. Haupert ended up with just one point, but she did pull down 11 rebounds and block one shot.

Bridget Hurley chipped in three points and six rebounds, Mikayla Eslinger had five rebounds and one assist and Mackenzie Schmitz tallied two points and steals apiece plus one assist for the Raiders.

MAXWELL – A triple-double from Abbie Haupert wasn’t enough to get Collins-Maxwell-Baxter past Woodward-Granger in its season opener Nov. 22 in Maxwell.

Haupert had a monster game, but she didn’t receive enough scoring support in a 43-39 loss.

The game was deadlocked at 17-17 through one half of play. Woodward-Granger took the lead through three quarters at 31-28 and the Hawks did just enough to hold off the Raiders down the stretch.

CMB held Woodward-Granger without a 3-pointer and the Raiders did a little better from the line in going 8 of 16 compared to the Hawks’ 5 of 10 showing. But CMB only shot 33 percent from the field and the Raiders were also hurt by turnovers.

Haupert was fantastic to open the season.

Haupert hit 9 of 16 field goals, including both of her 3-point attempts, and 4 of 7 free throws to score 24 points. She also ripped down a game-high 11 rebounds and contributed an impressive 12 blocks defensively.

Bridget Hurley, Lexi Breon and Carter Larson were the only other Raiders to score. Hurley had six points, eight rebounds and two blocks, Breon contributed five points and six assists and Larson added four points and one steal.

Mackenzie Schmitz chipped in three assists and four steals for the Raiders.

Abby Musser had a strong all-around game to lead Woodward-Granger. Musser ended up with 13 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals.

Dalaney Bice added eight points and six rebounds and Tori Manning delivered six points and seven steals for the Hawks.
