CMB girls win regional opener

BAXTER – Outstanding defense over the final three quarters lifted the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter girls’ basketball team to a 48-25 victory over Ogden in the opening round of Class 2A regional competition Saturday in Baxter.

CMB held Ogden to six points or less in each of the final three quarters. The Raiders turned a 30-19 halftime lead into a 42-21 advantage through three quarters, and they went on cruise control the rest of the way to improve to 7-16 and keep their season alive.

CMB held Ogden to a measly 8 of 49 shooting night from the field. The Raiders were especially tough guarding the perimeter as the Bulldogs only went 1 of 17 from 3-point range.

CMB also dominated the boards, outrebounding Ogden by a 41-24 margin.

Abbie Haupert had 18 points, 14 rebounds and seven steals for CMB in the win. Forward Bridget Hurley stepped up with 15 points as she hit 4 of 6 3-pointers and also pulled down six rebounds.

Michaela Eslinger ripped down 13 boards and she also scored five points for CMB. Lexi Breon dished out nine assists and netted four points for the Raiders.

Liz Good had 10 points, four rebounds and two assists and Abbey Gustafson recorded five points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks for Ogden.

BAXTER – Not much went Collins-Maxwell-Baxter’s way in the second half versus Prairie City-Monroe Feb. 10 in Baxter as the Raiders ended the regular season with a 68-28 loss.

CMB was outscored 32-7 over the final two quarters.

The Raiders gave up 21 points in the first quarter, but they still were within striking distance at the half, trailing 36-21. But CMB was outscored by 13 points in the third quarter and the Raiders were held scoreless in the fourth as the Mustangs pulled away.

CMB only made 12 of 43 field goals and 1 of 3 free throws in the loss. Abbie Haupert had 14 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and one block and Lexi Breon finished with 11 points and five assists for the Raiders as they finished 4-14 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Rachel Freland led a balanced Mustang attack with 19 points and 10 steals. Abbi Gilson added 18 points and eight rebounds, Rachel Gulling put up 14 points, five rebounds and four steals and Courtney VanHouweling chipped in nine points, five rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block for PCM.
