CMB softball team loses first two outings

Raiders drop tough 2-0 battle to Defenders

COLLINS – A good start didn’t hold up for the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter softball team against Roland-Story May 22 in Collins as the Raiders were handed a 12-2 loss in six innings.

CMB scored both of its runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Raiders took a 2-0 lead into the top of the third, when Roland-Story scored twice to tie things up.

The game started to get away from CMB in the fifth inning. Roland-Story scored four unanswered runs in the inning and followed that up with a six-run outburst in the sixth.

The Raiders were unable to score after the first inning as the game was called due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Payge Jurgens hit her first home run of the season, Becky Williams went 2-for-3 and Megan Ritter had a triple in three at-bats to pace CMB on offense. Abbie Haupert and Abby Appelgate each singled once to account for the other Raider hits, and Haupert also stole a base.

Taylor Ross scored once and Courtney Ubben and Cheyanne Warne each drew one walk for the Raiders. Warne was the losing pitcher after throwing all six innings and giving up eight earned runs on seven hits with eight walks and three strikeouts.

The loss put CMB at 0-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

COLLINS – Great pitching wasn’t enough for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter versus Grandview Park Baptist May 21 as the Raiders only collected two hits in a 2-0 loss to the Defenders in Collins.

CMB pitcher Cheyanne Warne tossed a three-hitter and allowed just one earned run. But the lack of offensive support resulted in a loss, despite the strong pitching outing.

Warne finished with six walks and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Grandview Park Baptist got its first run in the first inning and its only other score came in the top of the fifth.

CMB only had three players reach base via a hit or walk on the night. Payge Jurgens and Taylor Ross each singled once and Brittany Peterson drew a walk.
