Comet boys lose squeaker to Norse

ALLEMAN – The North Polk boys’ basketball team couldn’t shake a rough finish to the first half in a 64-49 non-conference loss to West Marshall Saturday in Alleman.

North Polk only trailed by two points after one quarter, but West Marshall put up 18 points and held the Comets to single digits in the second period. That gave the Trojans an 11-point lead at the half and they put up 20 points in the third to build a 17-point advantage and put the game away.

North Polk shot just 35 percent from the field, compared to West Marshall’s 49-percent showing, and they had four more turnovers than the Trojans. West Marshall made six more field goals than the Comets and the Trojans also drilled six 3-pointers to North Polk’s three.

The Comets did do well on the glass, outrebounding the Trojans by a 33-21 margin.

Russell Greene had a huge game at forward for North Polk as he posted a double-double with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Brett Haun came off the bench to hit all three Comet 3-pointers and score 16 points as the other main scoring weapon for North Polk.

Ryley Sandberg, Blake Brauer and Hunter Dark each netted four points for North Polk. Sandberg also had six rebounds, two assists and one block; Brauer pulled down four rebounds and Dark added one board for the Comets, who fell to 1-2.

ALLEMAN – The one little extra spurt it needed never came for North Polk in a 52-47 loss to Roland-Story Friday in Alleman.

The Comets trailed the entire game, falling behind by double digits on three separate occasions. But they showed tremendous resiliency in making a couple of big runs to get back in the game and push the Norsemen to the limit.

After falling behind 16-6 early North Polk closed within six points at the half then pulled within 23-21 on a Russell Greene basket early in the third quarter. Roland-Story countered with a 9-0 run capped by baskets from Adam Shorkey and Zach Hovick to gain its biggest advantage at 32-21.

But the inspired play of Greene, forward Blake Brauer and guard Brett Haun helped North Polk gradually close back within two at 41-39 midway through the fourth quarter. The Comets continued to push the Norse the rest of the way – getting as close as one point on two separate occasions.

A driving floater by Haun got North Polk within 48-47 with just 1:04 remaining in regulation. But Roland-Story guard Ben Clark hit two big free throws one second later and then North Polk turned the ball over on its next possession.

Clark missed the front end of a one-and-one with 29 seconds left to give North Polk hope, but Haun was just off the mark on a tying 3-point attempt with five seconds left and Alex Urbanek sealed the game for Roland-Story by hitting a pair of free throws with 3.8 ticks left on the clock.

“(Roland-Story head coach) Darrin (Berggren) does a great job with those guys and they have a great lead guard (Clark) that controlled the game,” North Polk head coach Tron Scott said. “We gave them a run, we just couldn’t get that stop we needed to get over the hump.”

After losing star players Jacob Hadaway, Hunter Brunsvold and Eric Bonewitz off last year’s 16-8 team and with Greene coming off a football injury North Polk has needed several young players to step up in the early part of the season. Scott said he liked what he saw out of his inexperienced squad Friday.

“We are all about the team – we need to play with cohesiveness,” Scott said. “At times we did tonight. Everybody contributed at some point.”

Brauer and Greene battled foul trouble to lead North Polk in scoring with 11 and nine points respectively. Brauer also had six rebounds and one assist and Greene finished with eight rebounds, two assists and one block.

Haun came off the bench to score eight points on 4 of 7 shooting and he also pulled down three rebounds. Senior guard Ryley Sandberg had five points, six rebounds, three assists and an impressive four blocks and Reed Smith and Hunter Dark netted four points apiece and combined for seven rebounds.

Guards Dillon McBee and Austin Hillebo each scored three points and dished out one assist and senior Chris Flynn also provided valuable minutes off the bench for the Comets, who fell to 1-1 in the HOIC.

As a team North Polk outrebounded Roland-Story 37-31 and the Comets shot slightly better from the field at 39 to 36 percent. Roland-Story ended up making 15 of 22 free throws to North Polk’s 8 of 13 showing at the line and the Norsemen held the Comets to just 1 of 16 shooting from 3-point range.

Clark had 17 points, seven assists, six rebounds and four steals to lead Roland-Story. Shorkey tallied 13 points, nine rebounds and one block and Hovick finished with 13 points, four boards and one assist.
