Comet, Raider boys take top two spots at Raider Coed Invitational

BAXTER – The North Polk and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ track teams turned in dominant performances, occupying the top two spots in the final team standings at the Raider Coed Invitational Monday.

North Polk won the event with 130 points and CMB was second out of eight teams with a score of 116. South Hardin came in a distant third with 77 points.

Strong showings in distance and hurdle events keyed the team victory for North Polk.

The Comet 4 X 800-meter relay team of Reed Smith, John Lackore, Dillon McBee and Nathaniel Long won in eight minutes, 52.48 seconds. The North Polk 4 X 400 quartet of Brandon Albaugh, Smith, Long and Clay Cory also took first in 3:35.21 and the Comet distance medley group of Travis Letze, Nick Kibby, Albaugh and McBee claimed a silver medal with a 3:58.21 showing.

Individually, Long and Smith were second and third in the 800 with respective times of 2:00.86 and 2:08.89. Ryley Sandberg came in second in the 3,200 with a 10:51.86 showing and third in the 1,600 after crossing the finish line in 4:53.53.

Cory added a runner-up time of :51.45 in the open 400 for the Comets. Cory was also key to North Polk’s success in hurdle events as he won the 400 low hurdles and ran the lead leg for the Comets’ victorious shuttle hurdle relay team.

In the 400 lows Cory clocked in at :55.86 and teammate Austin Williams was second in :58.98. Williams, Zach Brecht and Russell Greene joined Cory in running a time of 1:01.96 in the shuttle hurdle relay.

Greene and Williams also took second and fourth in the 110 high hurdles with respective times of :15.36 and :16.04.

Cory gave North Polk a silver medal in the open 400 after crossing the finish line in :51.45. The Comet 4 X 200 team of Nick Kibby, Travis Letze, Albaugh and Matt Cox also took second, finishing in 1:36.29.

CMB did well in field events, and like North Polk, the Raiders found some success in hurdle and distance races on the track.

Zach Samson won the shot put and teammate Patrick Girard was third for CMB after they produced respective throws of 54 feet, 6.75 inches and 49-5. Samson also took second in the discus with a toss of 142-9.5 and Girard was third with a throw of 136-10.

Bryce Kemp added a runner-up jump of 19-5 in the long jump and Zach Huffaker and Hunter Gunderson were third and fifth respectively in the high jump after both clearing 5-10 for CMB.

Kemp won the 110 high hurdles in :14.99 and Jordan Coughenour was sixth in :17.05. Brady Stover turned in a fifth-place time in the 400 lows at 1:02.78.

CMB had the third and fifth-place finishers in the 3,200 as Aaron Ward ran a 10:59.15 and Mark Deutsch came in at 11:28.26. Ward and Deutsch were also fourth and fifth in the 1,600 with respective times of 5:04.95 and 5:09.97.

Austin Moorman came in fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:09.34, Coughenour was fourth in the open 400 after clocking in at :54.37 and the CMB 4 X 800 team of Kyle Cather, Zach Hartgers, Seth Balke and Moorman earned a bronze medal with a time of 9:04.13.

Kemp also ran a :23.30 in the 200 to place third and Gabe Schabillion, Nick Little, Joey Snyder and Cather ran a 4:02.52 in the distance medley to place third.

Ballard came in sixth in the final team standings with 57 points. The Bombers did well in distance events and also turned in a pair of quality sprint relay performances.

Noah Wheeler, Luke Kohut-Jackson, Derek Wright and Kobe Schulze teamed up to earn a silver medal in the 4 X 800 for Ballard with a time of 9:02.79. Wheeler also took second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:46.49.

The Bomber 4 X 100 team of Kirklynn Kohrt, Zach Thompson, Tyson Pritchard and Jacob Bernholtz finished second in :47.18 and the 4 X 200 unit of Kohrt, Pritchard, Mason Edwards and Bernholtz took the silver in 1:36.42. Caleb Schafbuch gave the Bombers a runner-up jump of 5-10 in the high jump and he was fifth in the long jump with a jump of 18-2.75.

Bernholtz, Edwards, Zach Upah and Schafbuch added a third-place time of 1:04.84 in the shuttle hurdle event.
