SAYDEL – The North Polk boys’ basketball team held off Saydel for a 49-48 Heart of Iowa Conference road victory Monday at Saydel.

The Comets started each half strong.

In the first half North Polk led by seven after one quarter. But Saydel held the Comets to just five points in the second period as North Polk’s lead shrunk to 20-19 at the break.

In the third quarter North Polk put up 19 points and increased its lead back to seven. But Saydel outplayed North Polk in the fourth quarter to push the Comets to the limit.

But North Polk hung on to improve to 9-11 on the season and 9-8 in the HOIC.

North Polk shot 43 percent from the field and made 7 of 11 free throws. The Comets also pulled down 26 rebounds, including seven offensive boards.

Russell Greene accounted for over half of the Comets’ rebounds as he posted a double-double.

Greene led North Polk with 19 points after making 8 of 16 field goals and 3 of 6 free throws. He ripped down 15 rebounds and added two steals and one block.

Blake Brauer added 11 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block. Ryley Sandberg chipped in eight points and three assists and Reed Smith also scored eight points.

ALLEMAN – A big transition game helped North Polk overcome a poor night at the line to defeat Greene County by a 73-62 score Friday in Alleman.

The Comets shot a gaudy 58 percent from the field, thanks to a great fastbreak that gave Greene County fits all night.

The Comets trailed 17-16 early in the second quarter and then a 16-0 run gave them control of the game.

Reed Smith scored a basket, Brett Haun hit a 3-pointer, Russell Greene scored inside and Blake Brauer added another long ball to put North Polk up 26-17. Ryley Sandberg scored off a feed from Greene, then converted a putback, and Brauer hit a pair of free throws to complete the run.

North Polk led 36-23 at the half. The Comets pushed their lead to 46-25 early in the third quarter as Sandberg netted five points, Greene and Max Karpinski scored two apiece and Smith hit 1 of 2 free throws.

“We knew if we came out in the second half and played the same way we did in the first half, we’d control the game,” Greene said. “They came out with five shooters, which was a little unusual because I usually don’t guard a guard. But I think we defended alright.”

Greene County started to make a run late in the quarter behind the hot hand of freshman Trey Tucker. Tucker scored six points and Greene County got 3-pointers from Landon Braun and Mitchell to get the Rams within 53-39 late in the third.

North Polk increased its lead back to 19 points early in the fourth.

Tucker scored 14 points in the final period and North Polk only made 2 of 9 free throws down the stretch to allow the Rams to hang around. But the Comets did enough damage in transition and on the offensive glass to hang on for the Heart of Iowa Conference victory.

North Polk ended up outrebounding Greene County by a 35-17 margin, including 14-4 on the offensive glass. That, combined with its transition game, was too much for Greene County to handle

“We’ve been talking that if I get a board everyone just run and I’ll find you,” Greene said. “I felt like a quarterback out there just running and gunning.”

Greene led North Polk with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He also had two assists, two steals and one block.

Smith netted a season-high 14 points. He was a perfect 5 of 5 from the field – with most of his looks coming in transition – and he also made 4 of 5 free throws.

“Russell got some monster boards and then everyone just kind of fanned out like a V and we were attacking on all cylinders,” Smith said. “I definitely like to get out and run. That’s my bread and butter.”

North Polk had great balance on offense. Sandberg added 12 points, seven rebounds and three assists; Brett Haun delivered 10 points, two assists and two steals and Dillon McBee and Blake Brauer scored seven points apiece.

“The points were really spread out tonight,” Smith said. “It’s good that we don’t have just one guy where we focus all our team around him.”

Free-throw shooting was the only drawback for North Polk. The Comets went just 11 of 28 from the line.

“It seems like at practice we make them,” Greene said. “I don’t know if we get in a game and our minds are full of stuff. We just need to clear our minds and shoot it and we’ll be alright.”

Tucker scored a game-high 30 points and added four steals and three assists for Greene County. Braun tacked on 14 points for the Rams.
