Comets stun No. 7 Raiders in regional semifinals

LAKE VIEW – The North Polk volleyball team made a major statement Oct. 31 as the Comets traveled to Lake View and upset No. 7 East Sac County in convincing fashion during the Class 3A regional semifinals.

North Polk turned in an awesome performance to earn its ninth-consecutive victory and get within one more win of qualifying for state. The Comets scored back-to-back 25-21 victories in the first two sets and then they finished off the Raiders with a 25-19 triumph in the third set to improve to 24-9 on the season.

“The long bus ride to Lake View didn’t bother the team, as the girls were upbeat and meant business,” North Polk head coach Susan Nemmers said. “They were focused on the task at hand. The season has been all about taking challenges and turning them into opportunities. I am proud of the team for rising up to the challenge of (trying) to make our state tournament dream happen.”

In the opening set East Sac County appeared the better team, taking a convincing 19-13 lead late in the set. But North Polk dug down deep and rallied for the win to turn the tide in the match, and the Comets never let the Raiders get any momentum back the rest of the way.

“I just told the girls that we needed to play point by point and see what can happen,” Nemmers said. “They understand what it takes to win. They are playing their best volleyball of the season.”

The Comets hammered down 38 kills with 16 errors in 125 attacks for a .176 kill-efficiency rate. North Polk also totaled 12 blocks and 61 digs and the Comets went 64 of 73 serving with six aces.

Megan Murphy and Hannah Becker turned in huge individual matches to lead North Polk to victory.

Murphy, a senior outside hitter, delivered 13 kills and 13 digs and she also went 10 of 11 serving with one ace. Becker, a freshman middle blocker, came through with an impressive nine blocks – including six solo blocks – and she also connected on nine kills with just two attack errors.

Outside hitter Lilly Lomica also came up huge. Lomica tallied 15 digs and three blocks defensively, went 18 of 19 serving with two aces and also came up with four kills.

Morgyn Bullock was outstanding in the back row as she led the Comets in digs with 18. Bullock also went 13 of 14 serving with a pair of aces.

Gracie Harmeyer was excellent directing the Comet attack, finishing with 29 assists and she also had five digs. Miranda Murphy chipped in eight kills and Jill Christensen finished with seven digs, four kills and two assists.
