Comets total 16 all-district selections in football

The North Polk football team put six players on the 2013 all-Class 2A District 7 first team after the Comets finished in a three-way tie with West Marshall and Gilbert for the district title.

Quarterback Cole Jackson, receiver Russell Greene and offensive lineman Jamaal Hansen made the first-team offense for North Polk. Defensive lineman Collin Hoshaw, linebacker Jon Lackore and defensive back Braedon Ingersoll were first-team picks on the defensive side for the Comets.

Jackson completed 74 of 123 passes for 994 yards and 11 touchdowns with four interceptions in district play. He also ran for 95 yards and three touchdowns.

Greene caught 28 passes for 355 yards and four touchdowns, despite missing two district games due to injury. Hansen keyed a Comet offensive line that paved the way for North Polk to average 30.8 points and 341.7 yards per game in district play.

Hoshaw anchored the Comet defensive front and tallied 31 tackles, one sack and a fumble recovery in district competition. Lackore was North Polk’s leading tackler in district play with 67 and he also had 13 tackles for loss, six sacks and one fumble recovery.

Ingersoll finished with 42 tackles in the district and he also contributed four tackles for loss and an interception.

The rest of the first team offense consisted of: offensive lineman Chris Sjoblom, running back and Devin Chesler, place kicker Rafael Rodriguez and running back/special teams selection Duncan Ferch from West Marshall; running back Chase Dobson and offensive linemen Alex Merfeld, Jake Kapustka and Aaron McCarville from Nevada, offensive lineman Logan Messenbrink and tight end Chase Whetstone from Gilbert; offensive lineman Nick Ahrens and utility pick Josiah Soderstrum from Roland-Story and receiver Bobby Hatton from South Hardin.

The first team defense featured: Dale Hilleman, William Ohrt, Matt Van Metre, Jared Johnson and Elijah Streeter from West Marshall; Jared Gescheidler, Wyatt Rhoads and Brady Kline from Gilbert, Patrick Stephenson from Nevada, Zach Hovick from Roland-Story and Chandler Hallett from South Hardin.

North Polk also had seven players named to the all-district second team.

Offensive linemen Ben Bruggeman and Ryan Polich, and running back Garrett Moeckly made the second-team offense for the Comets. Moeckly ran for 432 yards and seven touchdowns in district games.

Defensive lineman Blake Brauer, linebackers Kris Bower and Austin Williams and defensive back Landon Schuessler ended up on the second-team defense for the Comets.

Brauer had 38 tackles, six sacks and two fumble recoveries; Bower came through with 31 tackles, one sack and one interception and Williams made 33 tackles and two sacks in the district. Schuessler intercepted two passes and he also picked up 35 tackles.

Running back Matt Cox, lineman T.J. Krehbiel and receiver Grant Schiltz each made all-2A District 7 honorable mention for the Comets.

In district games Cox ran for 302 yards and two touchdowns and added nine catches for 143 yards and two touchdowns. Krehbeil made 17 tackles and four tackles for loss and Schiltz caught 14 passes for 176 yards and one touchdown.

Ferch was named the 2A District 7 Offensive MVP and Gescheidler was tabbed the Defensive MVP. Ferch ran for 1,084 yards and 10 touchdowns on an average of 10.2 yards per carry and Gescheidler racked up 61 tackles and returned one interception for a touchdown in district play.

North Polk head coach Evan Groepper was honored for leading his team to a share of the district title and its fourth-straight playoff appearance. Groepper was named co-coach of the year winner in 2A District 7, along with West Marshall’s Ken Winkler.
