Five Comets place at Mustang Invitational

GRIMES – The North Polk wrestling team had five individuals place at the Mustang Invitational in Grimes Saturday.

The Comets produced three fourth-place finishes and added one sixth and another seventh-place showing during the tournament. They tallied a total of 61 points to finish 13th out of 14 teams, coming just three points shy of Carlisle’s 12th-place score.

Gabe Surles, Chase Erickson and Jamall Hansen were the three Comets to finish fourth.

Surles went 2-2 at 106 pounds, Erickson was 1-2 at 113 and Hansen was 1-2 at 285.

Surles pinned Adel-Desoto-Minburn’s John Throne in two minutes, 46 seconds and toppled Webster City’s Derick Khaleck by a 7-2 decision for his two victories. Erickson’s lone win on the mat was a 9-1 major decision over Dallas Center-Grimes’ Bryce Moreno, and Hansen edged Grinnell’s Tanner Hoffstetter by a 3-2 decision for his lone victory.

Austin Smith took sixth at 120 and Jake Cory was seventh at 182 as the other Comets to place at Adel.

Smith finished 1-2 with a victory by fall over Grinnell’s Vlad Dimit in 3:54. Cory went 2-2, pinning Nevada’s Alex Peebles in 2:57 and ADM’s Darold Baker in just 43 seconds.

Graham Hoshaw and Ben Bruggeman each added one win apiece for North Polk. Hoshaw went 1-2 at 160 and pinned Carroll’s Brady Bender in 3:24; Bruggeman topped West Marshall’s Tyler Casady by an 8-5 decision at 220.

Creston-Orient Macksburg won the team championship with 214.5 points. Webster City was a close second with 207.5 points and DCG took third with a score of 187.5.
