The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team had four players receive all-Heart of Iowa Conference recognition in 2014 after helping the Raiders win five conference games.

Sophomore pitcher/outfielder Brady Stover and senior first baseman Zach Samson made the all-HOIC second team from CMB. Raider junior pitcher/infielder Seth Balke and freshman catcher/pitcher Hunter McWhirter were named all-HOIC honorable mention.

Stover posted a 3-3 record with an outstanding 1.39 earned-run average, 76 strikeouts and 23 walks in 40 ⅓ innings versus HOIC competition. He also hit .347 with two doubles, one triple, four steals and 14 runs.

Samson hit .295 with a .523 slugging average and three home runs in conference games. He also drove in 11 runs and made 39 putouts in the field.

The rest of the all-HOIC second team is comprised of pitcher Evan Johnson of Gilbert, catchers Alex Muhlenberg of Roland-Story and Jerod DeVries of Prairie City-Monroe, infielders Tyler Hovick and Ben Clark of Roland-Story and Mattingly Stone of Saydel, outfielders Russell Greene of North Polk, Nate Smith of Colfax-Mingo and Joe Sueferer of Saydel and utility pick Blake Brauer of North Polk.

In HOIC play Balke hit .209 with six RBI and he also went 1-2 with a 4.14 ERA and 27 strikeouts against no walks in 22 innings and added 16 putouts, 15 assists and committed just one error in the field. McWhirter posted a .216 average with one home run and four RBI, threw out nine runners from behind the plate and went 1-1 on the mound with a 4.42 ERA in 12 ⅔ innings.

North Polk senior Cole Jackson and Saydel senior Brandon Hodges were the first-team pitchers and North Polk’s Grant Lang and Gilbert’s Jared Gescheidler made up the catchers on the first team. The infield picks on the all-HOIC first team were Roland-Story’s Zach Hovick, Saydel’s Alex Gustafson and Devin Porter and Nevada’s Alex Good.

North Polk’s Reed Smith, Roland-Story’s Cole Birchmier and Saydel’s Michael Miller formed the first team outfield. North Polk’s Grant Schiltz was the first-team utility pick.
