Four Raiders named all-HOIC in boys’ basketball

The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ basketball team had four players pick up all-Heart of Iowa Conference honors in 2013-14.

Bryce Kemp, Austin Moorman, Zach Samson and Seth Balke were all rewarded for helping the Raiders turn in their best conference finish in years by placing fourth in the HOIC with an 11-7 record. CMB ended up 15-8 overall on the season.

Kemp made the all-HOIC first team. The athletic 6-5 forward averaged 13.9 points in conference play, shooting 51 percent from the field and 71 percent from the line and he also averaged 2.4 assists, 1.4 blocks and 1.4 steals.

South Hamilton’s Matt Hislop and Collin Hill, Prairie City-Monroe’s Logan Gilman and Dillon Bruxvoort, Roland-Story’s Zach Hovick, North Polk’s Russell Greene and Greene County’s Trey Tucker were the other first-team picks. Gilman was the lone unanimous choice.

Moorman made the second team from CMB. The senior guard averaged 11.2 points, 2.1 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 1.2 steals and he nailed 30 3-pointers and shot 72 percent from the line against HOIC competition.

The rest of the all-HOIC second team consisted of: Roland-Story’s Ben Clark, South Hamilton’s Trevor Ullestad, Gilbert’s Wes Greder and Jared Gescheidler, Saydel’s Alex Gustafson, Nevada’s Cole Gidel and North Polk’s Blake Brauer.

Samson and Balke were all-HOIC honorable mention.

Samson provided tough defense and rebounding at forward during his senior year. Samson averaged 7.7 points, shooting 57 percent from the field in conference play and he also snared 8.7 rebounds per game.

Balke put up 10.9 points per game, shooting 53 percent from the field, 59 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the line against HOIC foes. He also averaged 4.4 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals.
