More heartache for CMB

BLOOMFIELD – It wasn’t meant to be for the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter football team Friday as the Raiders were denied a playoff berth in the final game of the season for the second year in a row with a 33-31 loss to Davis County in Bloomfield.

CMB needed to win by 10 points to secure a playoff berth. The Raiders held a 31-21 advantage following a 65-yard Bryce Kemp fumble return for a touchdown with just five minutes, 20 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

But then misfortune struck the Raiders again.

Last year a blocked extra point cost CMB the playoffs in a 41-35 win over Davis County. On Friday, the Raiders were burned for two touchdowns in the final 40 seconds by the Mustangs to see their postseason dreams dashed yet again.

With 37 seconds left in the final period, Mustang quarterback Justin Utt capped a scoring drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. Davis County failed on the extra point as CMB held a 31-27 advantage.

The Mustangs then decided to go for an onside kick and they succeeded in getting the ball back. The recovery sealed CMB’s playoff fate, but Davis County rubbed salt in the Raiders’ wounds by picking up a touchdown on a 32-yard pass from Utt to Dillon Garrett with nine seconds left to steal the victory.

“Friday was a tough game for all of us,” CMB head coach Rob Luther said. “We knew we had to win by 10, we just couldn’t hold that margin. I think the on-side kick was incidental in some ways. We were so focused on winning by 10 – that was our goal.”

“I felt if we just needed a win Friday the outcome would’ve been different, but we put ourselves in that situation,” Luther added. “I feel bad for our seniors to go out that way. they battled all year long. It really stings right now because I know we have a very good ball club. We played a lot of good teams this year and the margin of error is slim when you play teams as good as we did. I love our guys and who they are, both as players and young men.”

CMB finished 4-5 overall and 2-4 in Class 2A District 6. Davis County ended 4-2 in the district and the Mustangs will take a 5-4 record into the playoffs.

The Raiders ended up with 373 yards of total offense against Davis County. They had great balance with 189 yards passing and 184 rushing.

CMB quarterback Zach Samson closed out his outstanding career with a tremendous final game. He ran for 161 yards and three touchdowns on 18 carries, and completed 13 of 18 passes for 189 yards with no interceptions.

Senior Austin Moorman hauled in seven receptions for 116 yards. Brady Stover made four grabs for 46 yards and Kemp had two catches for 27.

Gabe Schabillion tacked on 24 yards rushing on nine carries.

Defensively, CMB yielded 442 yards of offense. The Raiders forced two turnovers and didn’t commit any.

Junior linebacker Clayton Weltha made 12 tackles, senior Logan Cory had 10 stops and one tackle for loss and Kemp came through with nine stops along with his big fumble recovery.

Austin O’Connor, Nick Littell and Moorman each added seven tackles for CMB. O’Connor and Moorman each had one tackle for loss; Littell made two stops behind the line and Stover added four tackles and an interception.

Joey Nissen made all four of his extra-point attempts for CMB and he also drilled a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Spencer Bassett was Davis County’s biggest weapon on offense as he ran 42 times for 201 yards and two touchdowns and also made one 10-yard reception. Utt completed 11 of 16 passes for 144 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and he also ran for 97 yards on 17 attempts.
