No. 10 Comet girls roll past Norse, Tigerhawks

STORY CITY – A great first half keyed a 67-54 road victory for the North Polk girls’ basketball team over Roland-Story Friday in Story City.

The Comets started off the game red hot, scoring 25 points in the first quarter. By halftime they had built a huge 43-25 lead.

Roland-Story played North Polk tough in the third quarter, but the Comets still increased their lead to 20 points by the end of the quarter. That enabled them to go on cruise control over the final eight minutes to improve to 11-3 overall and 10-1 in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

North Polk shot 50 percent overall from the field (25 of 50) as well as from 3-point range (8 of 16). The Comets also held Roland-Story to 6 of 22 shooting from behind the arc and they outrebounded the Norse, 32-21.

Miranda and Megan Murphy combined for 43 points in the win. Miranda led the Comets with 23 points and 14 rebounds and Megan hit 7 of 10 field goals and 4 of 6 3-pointers, finishing with 20 points.

Rachel Zimmermann added 10 points, four rebounds and four steals. Maddy Hill scored four points, Riley Murphy netted three and Hannah Becker came through with two points, seven rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the Comets.

Natalie Vance scored a game-high 25 points and she also tallied three steals for Roland-Story in a losing effort. Taylor Olson chipped in five points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks and Brittany Hammes scored eight points for the Norse.

ALLEMAN – A monster first half allowed North Polk to use the second half as mop-up time in a 57-21 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over Colfax-Mingo Jan. 14 in Alleman.

The Comets put the game away after the first two quarters. North Polk led by 19 points after one quarter and by halftime, the Comet lead had swelled to 47-13.

North Polk held Colfax-Mingo to 8 of 38 shooting from the field (21 percent). The Comets made 25 of 53 shots (47 percent) and also picked up 12 steals.

Megan Murphy hit 10 of 16 shots, including 3 of 6 3-pointers, to outscore Colfax-Mingo by herself with a game-high 23 points for North Polk. Murphy also dished out three assists and came away with one steal.

Miranda Murphy tacked on 14 points, eight assists, six rebounds, five steals and one block. Macy Gill also scored in double figures for the Comets with 12 points and she tacked on four rebounds and one assist, steal and block apiece.

McKenzie Cogley scored nine points and Jena Teed finished with eight points, four rebounds and two assists for the winless Tigerhawks.
