No. 3 Ballard girls roll past Newton

NEWTON – Defense was the difference for Ballard in a 57-41 non-conference victory over Newton Friday at Newton.

The Bombers, ranked third in Class 4A, forced 24 turnovers and only committed 13 and they held the Cardinals to just 31 percent shooting from the field. The great defense combined with a solid 43-percent shooting night from the field and 12 of 14 showing at the line to help Ballard easily overcome a 39-24 rebounding deficit to get a victory in its first game back from break.

Ballard, which had a six-game winning streak snapped just before Christmas by Adel-Desoto-Minburn – came out a little sluggish as the game was knotted at 16-16 after one quarter. But the Bombers held Newton to just 13 points combined over the next two quarters to build a 41-29 advantage, and they kept pulling away in the fourth quarter to improve to 8-2.

Emily Knittel, Gabie Doud and Jenna Moody all scored in double figures for Ballard in the win.

Knittel scored a game-high 22 points after making 8 of 14 field goals and all six of her free throws. She also had two assists and one steal.

Doud put up 17 points after shooting 7 of 14 from the floor and 3 of 4 from the line. She also came through with five assists and four steals.

Moody ended up with a career-high 13 points. The freshman made 5 of 8 shots, 2 of 5 3-pointers and her only free throw; she also had one steal.

Abby McGee, Kenzie Ihle and Alanna Dubberke didn’t score, but they made valuable contributions in other ways for Ballard.

McGee ended up with five assists and five steals and Ihle pulled down six rebounds and chipped in three assists, one steal and one block. Dubberke anchored the Bomber defense inside with four blocks and she also delivered five rebounds and two steals.

Michaela Jacobsen led Newton with 15 points and she also had five rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block. Shelby Gray tacked on 10 points, five rebounds and one block for the Cardinals, who fell to 2-7.
