No. 7 Comet girls win regional opener

ALLEMAN – The No. 7 North Polk girls’ basketball team took care of business in its Class 2A regional quarterfinal game with Clarke Saturday.

The Comets started strong and maintained a solid lead throughout in a 65-41 victory at Alleman.

North Polk led by 10 points after one quarter. Clarke played tough in the second period, but North Polk was able to increase its advantage to 35-23 at the half.

In the third quarter the Comets limited the Indians to just seven points to build their lead to 19 points. They added 16 points in the fourth quarter to seal the deal and improve to 18-4 on the season.

The Comets shot 45 percent from the field (26 of 58) and they held Clarke to 34-percent shooting (13 of 38). North Polk also went 11 of 15 from the foul line and the Comets dominated the glass, outrebounding Clarke by a 37-22 margin.

Miranda Murphy led three Comets in double figures with 22 points and she also pulled down 11 rebounds to record a double-double. Murphy made 9 of 18 field goals – including her only 3-point attempt – and 3 of 4 free throws and she also dished out four assists and tallied two steals.

Megan Murphy finished with 17 points as she went 7 of 16 from the field and 2 of 2 from the line with one 3-pointer. Freshman Maddy Hill added 13 points and six rebounds for the Comets.

Hannah Becker played well defensively for North Polk as she had seven rebounds and two blocks. Macy Gill chipped in four points, three rebounds and one block.

Devon Carson totaled 16 points and four rebounds for Clarke in a losing effort. Libby Bemis added nine points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal for the Indians, who finished at 7-15.

SAYDEL – A big fourth quarter got North Polk past Saydel by a 60-48 score Feb. 11 at Saydel.

The Comets rallied from a 28-24 halftime deficit to tie the game at 39-39 heading into the fourth quarter. The momentum carried into the fourth quarter for North Polk as the Comets dominated the final eight minutes to surge ahead and prevail in their final game of the regular season.

North Polk used a big shooting edge to earn the victory.

The Comets shot 45 percent (20 of 44) compared to Saydel’s 39-percent showing (18 of 46). North Polk also made 7 of 14 3-pointers compared to Saydel’s 3 of 15 showing from long range and the Comets went a solid 13 of 18 from the foul line.

Rebounding was another key to the Comets’ success. North Polk outrebounded Saydel by a 28-19 margin, including 11-6 on the offensive glass.

Miranda Murphy had 17 points, seven rebounds, one assist and one steal for North Polk in the win. Megan Murphy added 12 points, one assist and one steal and Maddy Hill had 11 points, six rebounds and one steal.

Rachel Zimmermann finished with nine points and one block and Hannah Becker tacked on eight points, four rebounds and one block for the Comets, who finished second in the Heart of Iowa Conference with 16-2 conference record.

Gabbie Richards led Saydel with 13 points. Cassie Chubb tacked on 12 points and Brooklyn Allgood finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four assists for the Eagles.
