GRIMES – Ballard went up against the No. 1 team in 4A May 29 when the Bombers traveled to Grimes to take on Dallas Center-Grimes.
Ballard received quality pitching from Kenzie Ihle and she was supported by strong defensive play in the field. But the Bombers couldn’t get anything going at the plate against Filly ace Paige Lowary, suffering a 3-1 setback for their first loss of the season.
The game was a scoreless tie through four innings. But DCG plated a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth and by the time Ballard got something going on offense it was too little, too late.
Ballard mustered just one hit against Lowary. Gabbie Scherle singled, stole a base and scored Ballard’s only run in the top of the seventh inning.
Sheridan Gealow drew a walk and pinch runner Madison McInroy stole a base for the Bombers.
Ihle gave up three runs – just one earned – on five hits with five walks and no strikeouts, going all six innings for Ballard. Lowary struck out 11 in seven innings to pick up the victory for DCG.
Jackie Peyton doubled in two runs, Brooke Kramer singled and scored and Madison Carpenter and Dani Heritage each crossed the plate once for DCG. Lowary, Allison O-Brien and Rachel Lowary each picked up one single for the Fillies.
